Remembering VJ Day, WWII ends

Today Sept 2 is VJ day.

Today in History: Gen. Douglas MacArthur signs as Supreme Allied Commander during the formal surrender ceremonies on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, bringing an official end to World War II.

Tokyo Bay, 2 September 1945 U.S. Navy carrier planes fly in formation over USS Missouri (BB-63) as the surrender ceremonies conclude.

One year earlier, Sept 2 1944:

September 2, 1944 - USS Finback (SS 230) rescues Lt. j.g. George H.W. Bush, USNR, who is shot down while attacking Chichi Jima. During this time, Lt. j.g. Bush serves with Torpedo Squadron Fifty One (VT 51) based on board USS San Jacinto (CVL 30). Lt. j.g. Bush later becomes the 41st president of the United States

Thanks, Crabman, for the excellent post. I have a special reason for observing the end of WWII, as one of my Mother's cousins still lies inside the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor.

Thanks for all the replies. History was my best subject, I suppose because it interested me so much more then algebra, etc. My dad was somewhere in the Pacific during WWII, US Navy.
