Our area of Calif sales tax is now a whopping 8.75 %!

thats is exactly why I am not making major purchases down there but will buy on my way down and my way home... new tires on the way down and new 47"TV on the way home...

Same here, state income tax and sales tax even on food. I can't even escape the state income tax because my retirement is from the state. Stuck for life.

I find that price for beer interesting being that NH's state motto is "Live Free or Die".

Yes, you are correct but the other side of that coin is we have a huge "cash economy" out there; illegals, flee market people, etc. that do not pay any income tax as they do not get a W-2 or 1099. Sales tax is about the only taxes they do contribute in support of our government services. And in our state, when paying via food stamps or WIC program, sales tax on groceries is exempt. Yes, the poor who are not on a government program have to pay the sales tax on groceries.
