Crabman, My DW worked for a county in MD, up the Bay from you and she only pays around ten or so percent of the health insurance premium. That not only allowed us to retire early as she had over 30 years service, but was a big factor in letting me run a small business without having to worry about providing health insurance for the family. Before I get jumped on for not caring, the people who worked for me were 1099 workers who might only do a job or two a month for me.
An old friend who had a pretty high position since college with another state had to pay a huge amount of his retirement check to maintain his employer's insurance, as I understand it. My wife made half what he did, yet their net retirement checks aren't far apart And to think I wanted her to quit when we got married in the 80s and work only for me!

Yes all counties and companies seem to have a different plan. Unfortunately the two counties here on the shore are among the poorest and the school employees are among the lowest paid in the state, due in part to the low tax base here. The county family insurance plan for a school employee is $1100 a month with no dental or vision insurance. (OUCH!) The employee themselves can get a fairly good deal, only around 185.00 a month, but no help for the family. Some of the bus drivers and aids would actually OWE money each paycheck if they opted for the family plan. Ouch again.
I have my own plan for the family, somewhat cheaper but with higher deductibles.

32 years state service and if I retired now the family health insurance plan is $1452 per month. Oh yeah, they will give me about $130 per month toward the $1452.

Medical coverage is a recurring theme in this thread. I can tell you that I am very glad to live in Canada where there is a Universal Health Care program. Everyone is covered with no exclusions regardless of income. Everyone from Billionaires to retired folk to working families to people with disabilites. In my mind that is the fair way to treat everyone. It sure is a relief in retirement.

Thats called Medicare down here in the states and we get that at age 62. I don't really feel like paying healthcare for everyone else that doesn't work and I hate the word "fair." I suppose there should be a government program to distribute sirlion steak to everyone who cant afford it, cause that would be fair. Also the 80% could also come into play because during retirement you no longer continue to contribute funds into your retirement like you did when you were working, and in my state I no longer pay state income tax on my retirement.

The only problem with getting medical insurance coverage under Medicare at age 62 is that to qualify one has to be classified under a specific disability, otherwise we wait until age 65.

Been putting in around the mid point on a 401k for 8 yrs, got two kids in elementary school, wife in college and work about 50-60hr a week. Just hope we'll be ok down the road but who knows. We just try to plan as best we can but I'd rather make sure the kids are set with college and some before I worry about retirement. Im 34 btw.

If the healthcare act is not repealed then it is going to get worse. When people sell their house 3.6 percent goes to the government, everytime you make a deposit, change money around from one account to another 10 percent goes to the government. So I can not see how anybody can get ahead with all of the stuff that is going on. You know after planning this for a lot of years and now there are wrenches thrown into the mix it is really dishearting to even think about it.

I believe four more years of the same won't be the same, it will be much worse. I'm guessing my personal hit will be similar to our having another child. Without any of the pleasure that made it worth it the first three times.
That goes beyond just money. Kids also limit our mobility. Decreasing our mobility is never mentioned, but all experience indicates it is either happening as an intention or, best case, just an unintended consequence. GHU.

I retired debt free. To my surprise Foremost Insurance Company increased my insurance premium because they said I was a higher risk without debt. Argued with them for 6 months before I cancelled them. Credit score at the time was 802.

As a teenager trying to charge tires for my first car, a credit manager said to me that NO credit history is the best credit report one can have. What a difference a half a century makes!
