Tenting

We currently have a 2015 SLX 264BHW. We have moved from tents to pickup camper to popups and now on our 3rd TT. But what we are finding and confirmed by camp hosts this year is that many more sites are being filled with tents then in recent years. State Parks and private also. Just find it interesting and bit perplexing when a tent occupies a large electrical site (but they have rights too!!)...

Seems a lot more folks getting the camping bug, and starting out with tents first, then finding out what type of camper they want afterwards. The state parks up here do limit tents to only electric at most. Even PUP's without a toilet, can't reserve a full hook up site. Can't speak about private CG's.

Last weekend we were out in a VERY large state park (over 400 sites total IIRC), and as RVers, we were VERY MUCH in the minority. In the loop we stayed in, I'd say about 10% of the sites were occupied with RVs. All sites 50/30/20A and water equipped, but no sewer (several dump stations available throughout the park).

Tents are a great way for families to get out there and not break the bank doing it. With people stretching their dwindling dollars ever further, I'd expect to see a lot more camping going on in general, and especially tenting.

I personally have not seen the number tents increasing.

Many parks in the WI State system added electric to many sites over the past few years. The reason is that many tenters are looking for electric now that everyone has smart phones and tablets.

Ya know, the wife and I were talking on our last trip. Of all the years we tent camped, not once did we ever get a site with electric or water!! Don't have a clue why...just never did. What were we thinking? Do you know how many times I wished for a fan..or a electric lamp? And never dawned on us to get a site with electric or water!! Sheesh!!

The state park closest to me has some beautiful non electric sites that the tenters fill up very quickly. I've only seen an RV on one like three times. I have seen tents overflow into some electric sites though. Us RVers aren't out numbered there, yet... Glad to see so many young families enjoying the outdoors.

We camp up in the SKYLINE DRIVE area alot and usually get two sites together. One for the OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer and the other one for our three room TENT setup... This is usually whne we plan on staying for the week or so...

We were avid tent campers back in the day and still really enjoy it...

The SKYLINE DRIVE camp sites in VA we get 50% off the cost for being seniors so use that as an excuse to get two two sites haha...

Sometimes our kids come up and visit us for a night or two also...

As a campground host I have often wondered why tenters flock to pull through RVing sites rather than tenting sites..

When I know space is tight I'll rent 2 sites and just share the extra space with my neighbor. I've been in a few where you can't extend your awning out all the way. People with kids enjoy that extra space the most.

We've always reserved sites with electric and water when we were tent camping. I also have noticed the trend over the last several years of more and more RV's, but then I am sure some of it is due to more awareness now that we are RV'rs now...

But it all makes sense though.. Baby boomers are older now, RV prices are lower too. Just makes sense that more and more would be RVing.

In the campgrounds I have worked or visited, the trend is away from tents to bigger RV's and cabins. The RV's have gotten bigger and more elaborate and tents have decreased. These are private campgrounds not public. The large long pull through sites tend to fill up first, and are filled up almost 100% of the time.
