US 54 in New mexico

I'm seeking info on US 54 from Alamogordo, NM to Santa Rosa, NM- We are aware of a mountain pass north of Alamogordo but believe it is not too severe- Part of this route was upgraded in 09 according to our atlas- I understand this road has considerable truck traffic- Any knowledge y'all care to share will be gratefully received- THANX in advance- DD

I do know that there is a LOT of truck traffic, my friend,[ 18 wheeler driver] always comes to the southwest that way and he gets mad cause of the traffic
