Question Walking stick medallions

Hi all, I have a walking stick that my kids bought for me that is made of oak. I have bought several of those medallions that are from the various parks we've hiked but for the life of me, I can't easily attach it to the hard wood stick. It came with 4 nails but they easily bend when trying to nail them into the that hard oak. I've now decided it's necessary to drill a pilot hole (1/16") but was wondering what is the best nail/screw (stainless/brass/wood (sheet metal) to use so it doesn't rust or fall out.
Any tried and true tricks out there?

Mounting medallions

I would use small & short (as possible that would properly secure medallions) stainless steel sheet metal screws, as they are uniform diameter their full length (vs tapered wood screws). 'Pilot hole' should be close to screw shank diameter (not overall diameter including threads), so that threads cut their way into the wood, but minimize the risk of splitting it. Drill pilot hole slightly shorter than screw shank length (under head length, also less medallion thickness). Others may have better ideas, so that's just my take. Good luck.

Also fill the holes with white glue to keep the screws from backing out

I'd suggest going in a different direction:

Drill a 1/4" or 3/8" hole and tie the medailions to the stick using a leather thong.

The medallions I have attached usually come with 4 nails but only 3 nail holes. The reason they come with 4 is so that one can be used as a drill bit. I put one in my chuck and predrill about halfway. Then I use a tack hammer to finish them off.
