It jumped the hitch, busted open the tailgate and then lodged itself on the tail gate. I used the panel inside to raise the front jacks enough to get it out of the tailgate and then pulled forward. Removed the tailgate and hooked up gain. Had to cut wires for the camera and lock. Painful.

Trailer has some scrapes on the front cap, a small divit in front cap corner, some spiderwebbing under that camp in a small area, and I lost one of the covers on the under cap light switches. Also, trailer brakes won’t work now. Sad day, but at the same time, no one died and we’re a deductible away from repair. Getting some banana pudding at Buccees now and trying to be positive.

Bright side: Almost end of camping season...oh wait, we're in Texas. And your bed sides don't appear damaged. AND it didn't come forward and kiss the cab. Wonder why brakes aren't working? Is it the break-away under the hitch? You DID get lucky, coulda been a lot worse.

What Did You Do To Your RV TODAY?

Break away is next to the hitch it was connected to the hitch and activated. Works quite well I might add. I plugged it back in, but no dice. Maybe it has to do with the camera and tailgate lock wires I cut to get the tail gate off. Once home, I’ll really go over things. It’s acting as if not even plugged in as far as brakes are concerned , but I have all the lights. This is where it pays to have a right sized truck with exhaust break.

The bed does have some denting. This will for sure be an insurance claim.

I am never sure about this idea, but I have heard of brakes not functioning after people tried to use them as parking brakes. A quote from an article about that.
"If the breakaway switch is left engaged for more than a few minutes, you risk overheating the brake magnets and / or depleting the RVs 12-volt house battery."

The reason the former is suspect to me is, what happens when you are stuck in a traffic jam.....

Well, we had the dog so after the incident, the truck was never off more than a moment. I shut it down to fill up and when I started it we had brakes again. It was either that or the banana pudding.

Maintenance and repair

Screw bar in stabilizer was bent due to over eager impact wrench. Fixed that one to almost new condition. Added a magnetic door stop to bathroom do so it always stay open at night unless you want it closed. Replace a number of the screws which hold the plastic fender in place. Fixed latch on one of the cabinet doors below the dinette seat, it was off over 3/8 of an inch. Caulked another one of the cabinet door inserts that keep popping out. Tighten all screws on the TT inside and out. Would wash and wax except with the fires still burning we get a coating of ash every night.

Thanks guys. I still can’t believe I drove to the dump station, and then 35 miles of 60mph back roads and a little interstate before it came off.

Sorry about your mishap, but so glad you all were OK. Trucks and trailers can be repaired.

Sorry you had to go through that. I admit, from here, you seem to be taking it well.

Two years ago I witnessed a large 5ercome off the hitch at the campground, just as he was starting into a pull through. It sure is a horrible noise. He lost the box, tailgate, and landing gear. He had just driven 30 miles from home, and swore he did a pull after hitching up. I guess it happens for some unknown reason sometimes.

I'm glad you all are ok, and no one was injured. You were lucky it didn't come completely off and go rogue.

Exactly. Had it gone rogue that could’ve killed someone and of course destroyed the trailer as it yard sailed down I-30. Lots of motorcycles amongst the traffic yesterday. The tailgate saved me on this one. The pin was lodged in there tight.

Since I didn't realize it until I got home nearly 400 miles away, it was too late.

Getting ready to move to Arizona and live in it for several months there was no way we were going to sleep on that thing every night. I got my neighbor to help me swap in the new one and he took the original to put in his toy hauler. He's the type that will take anything free and I'm glad he did.
I bought a Sleep Number RV Radius King and still have it 10 years later. Great solution, but I am full time so the cost wasn't an issue.

This morning I gave it a bath further prepping it for a 550 mile trip in 9 days to live in it in Arizona while our new home is being built.

Today I put a coat of Griots Ceramic Wax on it to help protect it from the Arizona sun when we get down there next week. This stuff works great...

Yes, very much so as long as it's not in direct sunlight. Just spray it on and buff it to shine. I originally used it after I took a buffer to the fading front cap. I put on about 3 coats hoping to keep it from fading and 4 months later it still looks like the day I did it. Water still runs off it like the day it was applied. Although it was under my cover, but it still got a good 3-4 hours of direct desert sunlight until around noon.

Replenished fridge an cabinet filled water tank for round 2. I used to leave my pop up camper out at the huntin lease but die tobacco break in I refuse to leave my now Jayflight out there so I drag it back an forth every weekend. Have to say it's still so much easier preparing for each weekend and upon my return home.
