Had to work on my water heater leaks again. Finally figured out the problem was that the plastic fittings that screw into the tank are NOT made with tapered pipe threads. The threads are compression fitting threads, and without the taper, they don't seal well.

I pulled the fittings out, cleaned them up, and wrapped them with a lot of teflon tape. They went back in a lot tighter this time, so I'm hoping they won't leak again.

Opened up to check the inside to ensure no rodents, leaks/moisture or saggy roof from snow. Happy to report all was good except the winter antifreeze I left in the toilet to cover the seal was slushy...I kind of thought it should remain liquid no? 17F/-8C out today but has been as low as -18F/-28 in the last few days.

RV antifreeze will not freeze but will turn slushy. Not to worry.

Thanks Norty1, I suspected that was the case but this is the first HTT I own with a toilet where I'd actually see the antifreeze. My previous unit was a PUP and thus I only had to worry about sink, freshwater tank and water pump, none of which I would see when stored for winter.

From what I understand, RV AF will freeze, but does not expand like water, this expansion is what causes all the problems.

I used mine for a few days at the beach. Obviously I don't live on the east coast.

Taking the cover off in 2 weeks. Already shoveled and brushed all the ice and snow off. If it snows more I'll put electric heaters inside with the vents open and it should all melt. They going south in 5 or 6 weeks. Right now it is -2 with -15 later tonight and won't hit 40 for 3 weeks.

I ordered some new sealant, a water heater drain valve, and a new Safe T-Alert 35 dual series. They are on sale at Camping world for 73.77.

I can't wait to see how well this works.

Here is the detector.

Checked for leaks on the water heater fittings I redid. Looks good- no drips or seeps. Teflon tape is almost as good to have around as Duct tape.

Bill, you only need duct tape, just ask the expert.
