Vacuum wipers are something best forgotten.

Anyone remember the hill holder some old Studebakers had? For that matter, anyone remember the Studebakers? Good car but killed themselves when they got a little ahead of the times.

How about gas caps located behind tail light assemblies and hinged license plates.

I remember the hinged license plates, and also the pickup trucks with gas tanks behind the seat and the gas cap on the cab. And 30 some cents pg gas. That`s a little more in my time zone, Bob.

In my small town where there was never much exciting happening, the car dealers would draw the curtains on their showrooms the day before the new model year cars arrived and the next morning, everyone put on their Sunday finest and made a tour of the dealers. Each of them had food, drinks and doorprizes and it was a big annual event. Nowadays, you can't tell a 2012 from a 2009 and darn sure don't know when the "new models" come out. Only those over 50 will remember this.

First car was a 1948 Prefect. Right hand drive, when you hit the turn signal switch a little arm flipped up with a lite in it. Also had a hand crank. I was Stationed in United Kindom in 1967 when I bought this. Next was a 1957 VW Van. no heater and what was funny, the guy I bought it from changes motors instead of changing the muffler out.

How about 19 cents/gl go juice? I miss the gas wars.

What about the great smell of tire smoke? With synchronized first gears you could back up real fast and then put it in first, pin the throttle, and dump the clutch. Nothing but tire smoke and squeeling and big J hooks in the road.

Come to think of it I bought two tires a month and could replace a clutch in about two hours. I guess they were the good ole days.

My 1972 Gran Torino has (yes, I still have it) the gas filler behind the license plate. I always liked that feature because you could refuel the car from either side of the pump island.

The Gran Torino was my second car- purchased new after I graduated from College and got a job. Bright red coupe with a black vinyl roof (now there's something you rarely, if ever, see on today's cars), powered by a 351C (Cleveland) V-8 with a 2 barrel carburator & 3 speed auto trans.

I had one of those hinged plates - thought they were pretty cool!

I drove an old work pickup - I think it was a Dodge - the gas tank was basically the rear of the back seat - remember those? I always wondered what would happen in an accident!

All the old pickups had the gas tank in the cab. I had a '63 Ford F300 with the factory tank in the cab (the previous owner put another one in the bed). So did my Daddy's '66 F100 (he bought it new and kept it in cherry condition until he traded it on a tricked out van.

I hated it when the gas filler location started migrating all over the place. I miss the days when traffic flow at the pumps was always keep to the right of the pumps.

My father also had a Prefect in the mid 50's which had leather seats and a sunroof. I still remember the smell of the leather. It was left hand drive.

Did anyone have a Jeep Wagoneer?? Some people would carry a short piece of 2x6 for the rear tire to drive up on so you could fill the gas tank.

Ever try to fill both tanks of a 70's and 80's Chevrolet or GMC pickup? One gas tank on each side.

Nobody else has a first car story? Or are you ashamed to say your first one was an AMC Pacer, perhaps one of the ugliest cars ever produced?

What do you mean ugly?!? I kind of liked that car as it had a lot of glass. I was a AMC fan at that time and had a Hornet Sportabout.

Yes those vac wipers were bad but I didn't have to worry about them too much as the wheels would spin so much I couldn't go very far--- I WAS 18 WITH A HEAVY FOOT. Larry

My first car was a 1968 VW Beetle or Bug as we called them back then. I could fill that sucker up from empty for less than $3! It had AC (windows open) and a heater (you could see out of a 3-4" area near the vents in an ice storm) and it was really fun to drive.
