Keeping a dog cool when the weather is hot and you are boondocking and you have an excursion planned that doesn't allow dogs is an issue you have to plan for.
We wanted to do the Antelope Canyon tour that does not allow dogs. Wound up one signed up for the tour; not both of us. It turned out the cancer claimed our dog the previous day.. We decided to have her put down in Page even though we might have enjoyed one more day. She was suffering and had multiple cancers. I did not want to be in the position to throw her out after she died on the road in the desert with no vet available.
So making sure a vet is somewhere reasonably close is a good idea as well as day boarding facilities in the heat should you want to take a pet not allowed excursion.
We were able to find such facilities even in Valdez Alaska ( we were gone on a boat for 12 hours and hired a dog walker) and boarded her for a week in Quesnel BC when we went on a canoe trip.
We are going to Death Valley and have to do some research on dog care facilities.
In some National Parks you cannot take your dog with you. Carlsbad has a kennel but its not good.. The ranger said better off in your vehicle in the shade! We went early in the day and it was not hot..
Remember anything over 70 degrees and your pups may suffer.

Day boarding is fantastic advise. Thank you.
We have had great luck using Rover. We’ve met some sweet people but we study the reviews carefully.

Our dog Nancy is part of the family. We like to plan trips around where we can take her. We have left many things off our plans when we can't take her. That is one of the reasons we like taking the camper. Sometimes she gets a little carsick though. We usually let her drive a little till she gets over it.

Corgi
We travel with one Corgi Scarlet O'hara or as my husband says Scarlet O'hairy. Scarlet sets on the armrest looking out as we go. She has a little attitude. Plus we have Toy Manchester terrier and Pomeranian that travel in the back seat

And for you who find it necessary to day board please make sure your pet is vaccinated against kennel cough ( for dogs) . Otherwise you may be refused. Also make multiple copies of your furbabys vet record.. Immunizations and contact info etc. Give a copy to each caregiver.
Our vet at home was fantastic during our Goldens travels across the country and advised on palliative care via phone. We knew Lucy would never see Maine again but by golly she saw the Grand Canyon and walked the South Rim the day before she went over the Rainbow Bridge .
The hard part was having her euthanized and cremated away from home. Her ashes were shipped to us some six weeks later at home.

We take our 13 year old mix with us everywhere. When you travel with a dog you pay a price, especially in most National Parks as they cannot go on most (if any trails). We have learned to stay just outside the parks and drive in for the day. Our one fear is rattlesnakes. We travel a lot in Arizona, Utah, Nevada, etc. and are very careful. A few years ago a friend of ours dog got bit, over $3,000 later and she still almost died. But, we just are extra careful and love traveling with her.

I use Rover in my area for when we go away and can't bring poochie. So far, it's been OK. We're going on a multi state trip in April, and poochie will be along.
On two of the days, we'll be in and out of the rig during the day and night, and not sure if will be a good place for him, so I'm considering using a local Rover in that area for those days. Although, I'm not that keen using a stranger I've never met to leave him with.... decisions....

Our rescue dog is the reason we bought a trailer to travel, rather than stay in hotels and leave him home at the kennel. Having a portable, economy-size pooch makes it easy, inside and out!

We have travelled with our Scotties in the TT for 30 years with no problem. Bring along their toys, treats, and keep them comfy. Always on a leash outside to keep them safe from other dogs. Sure you may miss some things but the dogs are worth it.

We had to put Ol' Roscoe down last weekend. But before we did, we took him to our favorite campground for the afternoon. There was nobody there, but he made one last patrol. He wasn't well, but his sniffer was working non-stop. I think he loved it.

Yep.. I think that is why we bring our furry companions. Whenever and wherever the end is they are happy.

I'll revive this old thread, well, because I can, I guess.
Last May was a sad time for us, as we lost our beloved Corgi to lymphoma at the young age of 7. Because of our ages, he was going to be our last one, but his spoiled, lovable life was cut short, and we found a huge hole in our life. So, after some conversations, and phone calls, our breeder finally had 7 gorgeous fluffy puppies. They were to be expected last October, but Momma Corgi had different plans, so they were born in December.
We went to see them for the second time this week, at 8 weeks old. One of the prospective buyers backed out, so now there are two available...another long agonizing conversation on the way home. Final decision...we're getting two brothers.
Meet Bayley and Stanley. They'll be home the middle of March to make our home a Corgi Catastrophe!

Boy they are a couple of adorable Corgies! We were in the same boat, we lost Mini Aussie last May due to cancer. We agreed that this was going to be our last dog…..but after 5 months I could not stand having a constant shadow with me. In November we picked up a female Mini American Shepherd and she has been a lot of fun and work! Good luck with the sheadding

That's a gorgeous pup Brian!
Yeah, we've been warned that fluffies need a lot of brushing...and grooming the shorter haired Corgis don't require. The DW already has a Chewey.com cart started.

We picked up our new addition back in January - Noir Skye - she's adjusting to life on the road with lots of outside fun just well...
