In the 60's and 70's, at night you could pic up KB as far east as Boston, as far west as Milwaukee and as far south as Richmond, VA.

Brings back some memories. I grew up in the Toledo Ohio area, and in the early 60s the Motown music was very popular. We got the stations from Detroit, and also a couple from Chicago.

I was in navy boot camp summer of '65 at Great Lakes, I remember being a mess cook, and in the kitchen the cooks had WLS blasting. I can hear it now.... "Sugar pie honeybunch.... can't help myself..."

A great time for music.

I spent some time in San Diego, and after the service in Santa Monica, I remember the Wolfman.

Grew up in Chicago area and lived American Graffiti . Dog N Suds was the hang where I lived and worked at. WLS was the bomb at the time and I also still remember On Top of a Pizza... and it was I kiss my girl on the strikes and she kiss's me ......um.... yep fired LOL Late 50's and early 60s was a great time to be a kid. Anyone ever read Bob Green's books? Wrote about him growing up in Ohio same period, same life I had. He us to write for the Chicago Sun Times I think...till he got caught up with young girls.

Ahhhhhh the 60's in Chicago area. SKIP's drive in on North Avenue (wife was a North sider, Cubs fan, I was a South sider, SOX fan) and TOP's drive in on Ogden Avenue (Rt 66). Pulling into TOP's with the engine loping along (loved those BIG blocks), everyone staring, radio blasting, leaving the drive-in smoking the tires, the FUZZ harassing us gearheads. Glove box full of tickets. Even got one for excessive engine noise... not from the exhaust, but from the dual-quads.... OK so there was some exhaust noise too, the wife (dating me then) was really embarrassed by that one.

You have to wonder how we survived.

In the early 60's I'd buy SIX hamburgers for $1, and eat some of them in the car while listening to WOLF MAN JACK on the radio. Then head home late and eat the rest.

The First, 1000, and 2000 McD's (by Ray Krock) were in Des Plaines, ILL . I remember when it opened...actually Henry's was a bigger chain and better burgers ! White Castle were always a treat. We could go on a date and eat a burger, fries and coke and get change back from a buck.. White Castle you purchased by the bagful.

But Dog N Suds with car hop's (my wife being one) was a great place..Arnolds but better..Left and went to VN came home and society was all about drugs...sigh...

His first Mexican station was 250,000 watts, 5 times the limit allowed in the US. I remember him on XERB, only 50,000 watts.

The stations like WLS in Chicago (with three call letters) were clear channel stations. WLS sounded like a local station at night, even down on the FL line.

Y’all bring back a lot of good memories. I was raised in western NY and NW Pa. in late 50’s. Still have a lp album by the Rockin Rebels who did the theme on Dick Biondi show. Good times.

But do you know what the WLS stood for when it started?

I remember the Wolfman as well. While working in Acuna Mexico in the early 2000's I drove by the station every day where they still had a sign saying "The station that made Wolfman Jack Famous". Growing up in East Tennessee in the 50's my go to stations were WLS (Chicago), WOWO (Fort Wayne), WSM (Nashville), WFLI (Jet Fly Radio Lookout Mtn, Tn). Things were much simpler in those days. Listening late at night to your little 9 volt transistor radio was quite relaxing and put us to sleep every night.

1956, Broadcasting studios in Del Rio, Texas but the 50,000+ transmitter, illegal but hey, and 1000' tower was across the river in Mexico. Can't remember the call letters but Wolf Man playing Little Richard's 'Ready Teddy" could be heard all over the 49 states.

WolfManJack was hired to promo the opening of a new night club in Saskatoon Sask Canada. When he walked into the nightclub and looked around it he asked "is this a nightclub or a whore house?"

Geesh...

Youse guys are making me feel old. I grew up in the 50's listening to all those guys that have been mentioned and many more. Had a Rocket crystal radio...antenna strung around the room and ground wire tied to the radiator. Lived in New Hampshire and listened to Chicago, Albany, Dallas, Denver, Wolfman, New York City and more. I too kept a log and enjoyed all the different personalities on the air at night.

So much so that my first radio job was in 1965 in Portsmouth, NH. Then down to Boston, and on to AFRTS in the Air Force. Last radio job was KOA in Denver, one of the last of the 50KW stations still on air with original clear channel call sign. Did enjoy the job but switched to film/tv and never looked back. Still listen to 50's and 60's and have a nice library now of all the hits up to the 80's. I even have some of the radio shows with different jocks from around the country in the 50's and early 60's somewhere. Commercials are funny!

To discover my GMC Sierra Denali has a compact flash card input inside the console was heaven to me. I can put weeks worth of music on one card and listen forever!

Thanks for the memories!
