Yamaha longevity and reliability

Recently passed the 5000 hour mark on my 8 year old 115 four stroke outboard used commercially in salt water and its never missed a day due to mechanical failure. Note the character scratches/scars on the tach and engine. This aint no pleasure yacht. Anyone wondering about Yamaha generators and their reliability for occasional RV use this may offer a clue....

Lee,
I have to ask you.....having been used in the salt water for 8 years, how is it holding up for corrosion? I understand outboard motors like that have a zinc block bolted to them to be a sacrificial anode. Do you think it works to control the rust a bit?

Its holding up well. There is a zinc trim tab that I have replaced and another zinc block below the power trim assembly. These four strokes also have three zincs inside the engine block cooling system to reduce internal corrosion. I have replaced them twice.

BTW I`m close to 5200 hours now....

I went through a phase that lasted a number of years. I was fishing bass tournaments every weekend and pre-fishing for them on as many days as possible. I went through several boats and more than my share of power heads. I set them up to run well above max rpm range and used power jack plates to get them out of the water until the pressure began to drop. The idea was to never lose a shotgun start. On the big V6 2 strokes the only one I could not break was Yamaha. I went through 3 power heads of another brand in one seasons fishing. They all failed the same way, they had clamshell blocks and they leaked air. I beat that last Yamaha like a red headed step child but it's still running today although I don't own it now.

I see you are from NC. Both my boats were built there, the C-Hawk in the pic and my 33 year old Privateer, which I bought new when I was 18 and still use also. I also went through a phase of multiple powerheads lost in a short period back in the 80`s. They were NOT Yamahas either but domestics I`m sorry to say.

Well, I am sure we are both talking about the same motors but since all that's in the past I will not bash them on the internet. But that's what got me buying the Yahama's.

We have a 50 hp Yamaha on our 20 ft. pontoon boat, 12 years and still going strong. I also have a 9.9 hp Yamaha 4 stroke on my 15 ft. aluminum fishing boat, 10 years old and quiet as a mouse.

I have had a lot of Yamaha race bikes and ATV's. All were reliable and held up very well.
