I would really like to learn how to cook in a dutch oven. Is there a good on-line resource you could recommend? Also, what do you think is best... cast iron or aluminum?
Thanks in advance!

Cast Iron or aluminum
Cast Iron - look at Lodge products since they are well made and pre-seasoned.

Well, my wife and I bought our first Dutch Oven yesterday at Bass Pro. We opted for the 12" Lodge as this size seemed to be the most popular and this brand being the most recommended. We also picked up the necessary tools and accessories. Looking forward to getting started using it... can anyone make a recommendation for an easy first dish?

If it hasn't been don't forget to season it prior to cooking with it.

I used mine last week to cook corn on the cob. Just butter and wrap the corn in foil, place in the dutch oven, and then place on the coals for about 20 minutes. Also cut potatoes, carrots and onions and cooked the same way.

I have spent a good amount of time surfing a number of sites and found tons of excellent information. We have cooked Coke a cola chicken, baked onions, and this last weekend Chili Verde. Thanks for the tip on Dutch Oven Madness as I hadn't seen that site yet. Anyway, it's official, the dutch oven is now part of the camping gear! I will post up some pics of our trip last weekend as soon as i download the camera... the maiden dutch oven voyage.

LOL... I thought you posted this to see who was paying attention!!! I googled it and found many ideas; I had no idea that Coca-cola could be part of a marinade/sauce/recipe!!! Who knew.... *thinking we will have to try it ourselves*

I picked that one first because it looked so simple to make... the fact that it was very tasty was an added benefit!

Dutch ovens are cast iron pots with lids that you heat with charcoal briuets, on top and bottom of the ovens. You can cook any thing in them, chilli, bake a cake, many desserts, stew, potatoes, meatloaf, you can use them as a skillet to frey bacon, the possibilities are endless. They cook a little slower, and you have to watch your heat, not to let it get to high, but they make amazing tasting dishes.

Easy way to start is make a soup or stew or chili recipie that you love and put it in the dutch oven, and let it heat. Just a little heat for a couple of hours.

It is still to awefully hot around here to make chili. When it cools off, try making the chili with the cornbread on top of it. Absolutely awesome. !!!!!....Cc
