Beer Brats

This is more of an American recipe but I want to try to make it camping one time. I have a bit of an American palate. I have never made them before, what I am thinking after looking at google is, simmer beer, onions, garlic and some chilli flakes, add brats. Simmer together for about 15 min, remove and grill brats to finish cooking and colour them up. Brown some green and red peppers in a pan with the onions and some beer mixture. Then some nice hoagie or sub type buns put the works together and serve. Are certain brands of brats better than others? Hopefully some tailgaters can help me out.

Most brands sold in the super market about the same. If I buy super market brats I get Johnsonville. If you want some a step above supermarket go to your local meat market. If you like Brats and all other type of sausage if you are ever in TX go to Elgin,Tx their meat markets have the best I have ever eaten. Good luck

Having lived in Austin a while back, which is a few short miles from Elgin, I second that endorsement.
Lockhart, another town close to Austin also has some very good sausage as well. But since I am not near there any more, we always throw some Johnsonville's in the RV each time we strike out.

X2 on the Johnsonville brats. Don't get Kroger store brand, not worth it. (Recent experience).

My parents come from a small town in Ohio which has a brat festival every summer. Cook the brats as you said, but there the standard is slice it length wise, put between two slices of rye bread, with raw onion and mustard.
