Canned veggies. Drained or not

So in our house, we always have such meaningful conversations. Sitting here tonight watching the snow fly and our topic is canned vegetables.....to drain or not to drain. I always drain the liquid off of the corn or peas or whatever and add a little butter before I cook them. My elderly aunt that lives with us likes them cooked in the liquid. My wife will not eat any canned vegetables, they have to be fresh or frozen because she claims she doesn't like the salt, but she has always been difficult.

Anyway, so I ask you, do you drain or not before cooking?

Drain the liquid, add the butter! Then a quick trip to the microwave.

None of that agreeing with my wife talk. She doesn't need any encouragement.

We have a couple of these Pampered Chef plastic Micro Cookers with vented lids. One can and 2 min in the microwave and they are perfect.

We bring both canned and frozen when traveling/camping. Drain the canned after heating, then add the butter/seasoning. And hopefully I've not mistakenly picked up the "Low" or "No Sodium" cans as I will certainly hear about that... At home we keep a reasonable stock of cans on hand but prefer fresh from farmers market when in season or frozen.

The only time I drain is when I'm doctoring up a couple cans of black eyed peas. I use the juice from the tomatoes and bacon grease I sautéed all the goodies in first

We are, currently, making an effort to use more fresh vegetables, but the canned version do have a certain appeal for camping.

I drain - and often rinse - before cooking, because I find that gets rid of most of the "canned" taste.

Rinse. The only canned veggies I use is cut green beans (blue lake) - large can for large group. I drain and rinse a lot, saute up some onions in salted pork fat, add salt and pepper and large table spoon of sugar. Cover with water and cook them forever in a stock pot or crock pot. I also cook fresh green beans this way. You cannot tell the difference between the two. This is great for a cookout or camping. Otherwise, I do not like to use canned veggies but if I do use I always rinse.

For those of you that are using fresh vegetables while you are camping, do you bring them with you or do you shop locally? I'm one of those people that just want to have everything I need with me so I really don't have to leave camp unless we have a destination that we want to visit. Bringing canned with us just makes it easier to store.

Both
If it's a short weekend, we pack enough fresh to last us.
For a longer trip, we bring enough to cover the first couple of days, then go shoppjng.

DW and I backpacked and slept in tents for over 45 years and Nam before that for me so eating out of a can salt or no salt is no big deal. Harvested berries, eggs and raw veggies along the way with plenty of beans so now we eat almost anything and smile about this good life of camping with a roof over our head.

Just pulled a can of diced potatoes out of the trailer that was getting close to the best buy date. Drained them and baked them at 375 for 20 min with a little salt, pepper, parsley, and a few pats of butter. Came out darn good for a thrown together meal.

Interesting question.
Prior to Hurricane Harvey, I was the snob that wanted only fresh or frozen vegetables (with the exception of green beans from a can, always drained.)

Now that my house is under construction and I still don't have a kitchen, I've had to lower my standards. Since we basically have a propane grill (grill and one propane burner) and crock pots, I tend to use canned vegetables.
I drain them and add butter, salt, and pepper, or maybe Tony's.

With canned green beans, I drain them and add chicken broth and Tony's.

I look forward to my kitchen being completed so that I can steam frozen veggies on the stove top with some butter and Tony's.

Sometimes I'll eat peas right out of the can. I'd probably put "Tonys" on them if I knew what it is. Assuming some kind of seasoning.

Couple ways.
1. Simply warm w some melted butter.
2 Fry some diced Pancetta(Italian bacon)in a small frying pan, add the green beans and toss to coat.
3.Fry diced bacon, add the green beans , toss to coat
4. Melt some butter, add a clove of finely diced garlic, add green beans, toss.
5. Melt some butter, add sliced almonds, add green beans, toss to coat.
6. Eat out of the can, done it plenty of times.

Sounds great except that I would skip the garlic. I can't stand the taste or smell of it anymore.

Tony's.
I forget it's mostly found in the deep South.
