Thats where my fire ring goes so we moved that and cooked it there. I wouldnt do this on a manicured lawn or anything but it's good for camp!

K&L, I've never done garbage can chicken but I've done lots of other meat smoking such as beer can chicken, etc. An excellent site for smoker cooking is the:

Don't get hung up on the focus of the site being about Weber's Smokey Mountain Cooker. The recipes and techniques work well regardless and since this GCC is much like 'low and slow' cooking, it should work there too. Try some of the rubs from that site. They are really good.

When galvanize gets too hot it puts off a poisonous gas. Will this gas contaminate the turkey?
