Has anyone tried this??
It's Cooler Corn!
Am I the only person who hasn't heard of "cooler corn"?
As an obsessive food nerd, you'd expect that I would have heard of it, but over the weekend I was blind-sided by the simple genius of this method for cooking loads of corn on the cob perfectly.
I was happened while visiting my family in Maine. Short story: We like corn on the cob. And with eight adults at the table, that means a couple of dozen ears. We would have used the lobster pot to cook them all, but the lobster pot was busy steaming lobster.
Then my sister, a capable Maine cook with years of camping experience, says "let's do cooler corn!" Before I can ask "what the heck is cooler corn?" a Coleman cooler appears from the garage, is wiped clean, then filled with the shucked ears. Next, two kettles-full of boiling water are poured over the corn and the top closed.
Then nothing.
When we sat down to dinner 30 minutes later and opened it, the corn was perfectly cooked. My mind was blown. And I'm told that the corn will remain at the perfect level of doneness for a couple of hours.
Turns out, Cooler Corn is pretty well known among the outdoorsy set But for those of us who avoid tents as much as possible, it's perfect for large barbecues and way less of mess than grilling. In fact, I may even buy another cooler just so I'm ready for next summer. Now that I'm in the know.
My Aunt sent this to me in an email, just wondering if anyone on the JOF has ever tried it????

Interesting, we like the microwave method but it is time consuming if you have over 4 ears. I wonder if it would work in a smaller cooler? Will have to give it a try. I guess some experimenting is in order.

Snopes states that this has been around for awhile and will work but it is not recommended. There are chemicals in the cooler liner that MAY leach out due to the heat and MAY contribute to some types of cancer.
Not saying it isn't good but just relaying what has been posted.

does it have to be a Coleman cooler? we have those hard plastic coolers, wondering if it's the same deal. also I make corn on the cob in my slow cooker and it works great for only a few ears.

I prefer to nuke my corn but then never have a large group to entertain...
Here is a tip... after you have cooked the corn in the husk cut off the base of the cob and squeeze the ear out.. the silk will stay in the husk...

Never heard of "cooler corn." We always grill it (husks on) and then put them into coolers to keep warm until ready to serve.

I've seen this cooler corn thing before but I haven't tried it. They say it works great though if you need to make COTC for a bunch of people.
