Smokers. Who travels with one?

I have a Boston butt on my smoker right now and was thinking about bringing my Weber Smokey Mountain on our six week summer trip. It's the middle size so works great for my wife and I and wouldn't take up too much space in the truck.

I'm also thinking by removing the center section I might basically have a Smokey Joe charcoal grill.

My huge wood fired smoker could never make a trip but these little ones seem tailor made for travel.

Going to be watching the recommendations here. I'm looking to buy a smoker this year and know absolutely nothing about them.

I am considering this one or one like it. I had an electric half size brinkman barrel smoker that I used to use and it worked well. I recommend electric because it is hard to keep a charcoal word only smoker at the correct temp all day long without sitting next to it all day. Keep in mind that with an electric smoker that you are still burning (smoking) wood, this one uses pellets and I suspect would make some tasty BBQ and at a size that I think would work well for my needs.

I don't think this one uses an electric heating element for the heat, just to start the pellets and control the thermostat.

Me, too. I have read about some that you can control the heat (pellets) and liquid from a mobile app. The idea sounds great because you don't have to be in the area to maintain it. ... would like to hear from someone with experience with that type.

Edit: Better yet, I'd be glad to buy a slab of ribs from you if we're camping next to each other.

I have a couple different smokers. My experience with the Weber Smokey Mountain has been great. It's charcoal fueled and holds the temp very consistent over a 12 to 14 hour cook. No need to be standing next to it. I use the minion method which is very simple to master.

If we are staying somwnere for a week or more I bring my Weber Smokey Mountain. I swapped to a Pit Boss at home but actually prefer smoking with Charcoal. I do all the cooking when we camp and always enjoy smoking something while we are away. I carry the WSM on a cargo carrier behind the trailer.

I bought a Weber Master-Touch Premium. Great charcoal grill and works good as a smoker too. I took it on a trip this winter. Added a lot of good food.

I've used my WSM, a Char Broil propane smoker and a Green Mountain pellet smoker at different times when spending the winter in Quartzsite. Best tasting food came out of the Smokey Mountain charcoal smoker, but it required a little more babysitting than the pellet and gas smokers.

The pellet smoker was easy to use, and made the second best tating food, but required electricity, and I didnt' have a hookup boondocking in the desert. Had to disconnect the hot rod (which lights the pellets), and was able to use my small inverter to power the auger and fans.

The gas smoker was a pain in the petooty. Food didn't taste all that good, wind caused problems with heat. But using propane was convenient.

Weber smokey mountain would be my top pick when boondocking. With hookups, either a pellet smoker or the WSM would be a good choice.

Cleanup is a lot easier with a pellet smoker. There's a lot of ash to dispose of when you're done cooking with the Weber.

Did the initial cook on our new Traeger Ranger today. I have the Ironwood for home and now the Ranger for the Motorhome.

When I read the description line, I though it was about people who smoke cigarettes!

I have brought my smoker camping. My smoker is a lot of work to use, as it has to be babysat. So I prefer to use it at home, and bring something frozen.

We have the same one but a digital remote thermometer. That allows us to monitor it from inside. It is a big plus as we do a lot of smoking below freezing. No one wants to stand by it at minus 10. Have not considered bringing it because we really don't want to hang out at the campsite all day. However it does work well in foul weather!

I have a Green Mountain Grill - Davy Crockett model. It is a pellet smoker that can run off 120 or 12v. It stays in my 5th wheel in the front compartment where the generator prep is located (I don’t have an onan generator installed but had the generator prep option). I pull it out every trip and use it for something. Have smoked/cooked Boston butts, ribs, chicken, wings, steaks, burgers, brats, bacon, cream cheese, bbq beans, and many other things on it. Temp can be set anywhere between 150 and 500. So perfect for just about anything you could think of.

I love it and have had two other people purchase one after camping with me.

The company has upgraded the Davy Crockett to one called the Trek now.

We use a green mountain grill pellet smoker. Mines a Daniel Boone model but I think they changed the model name to Trek. It puts out great food and I dont have to babysit it all day.

I had the GMG Davy Crocket. A portable grill that has wifi that you can control every function from the comfort of your easy chair. Extremely accurate within 2 degrees which is phenomenal! I made a HUGE mistake by giving it to my son because it weighed 73 pounds and hauling it in and out of my basement got to be a two person job. I replaced it with a Asmoke 350...........what a piece of junk! No Wifi and the temperature it not even within 20 degrees. So erratic, stay away from this pellet grill! I will be going back to the GMG Trek which replaced their Davy Crocket. It is lighter than their previous model. Can't wait!

Pellet smoker

I use a pellet smoker from Traeger, it’sa table top model that I always have with me camping. Works like a charm for us!

I keep this in my fifth wheel. Use it often. It holds the temperature quite well. I do keep close to it though and do have to tweak it occasionally while smoking. Over all I’m completely happy with it.
