Square cast iron singles. I'm a tightwad and the thought of throwing away a portion of 2 slices of bread irks me. Besides, I like the way the crust gets crispy near the edges and having the pie or sandwich sealed up is of no importance to me. If you don't get some of the filling on your face, then there wont' be anything for your sweetie to lick off!

I sewed up a long drawstring bag from some brown duck canvas to store and carry my 5 pie irons in. Keeps the black soot in the bag and away from everything else.

Try the Rome Wilderness Griller. Makes the best burger or chicken breast around.

Just checked the Minut Pie Mold company's website and they state on the home page that their mold are made of aluminum, not cast iron.

A few years ago, I was working in a RV dealer in the parts department. I had a lady ask me one day if we had any round pie irons. Apparently her daughter wanted to make cherry pies and said they turn out better with a round pie iron than with a square one. I told her that my old high school math teacher once told me that you can't use round ones. She got a confused look on her face and asked "why is that"? I then told her that my math teacher had told me "Pie aren't round. Pie are square."

I like the double squares to do two english muffin breakfast sandwiches at once.
My tip for storage is the bag from a deceased folding chair....

cast iron only, I've had friends melt aluminum ones in the fire

We have 2 double squares for our family of 4. My wife always makes a batch of home-made bisquick-like mix before we go camping. For dinners, we chop up hot dogs of brats and veggies, and put it in there with the mix. For breakfast, straight mix with maple syrup.

We have also made scrambled eggs in them. Pie filling in bread. Chocolate and peanut butter in bread. Bread, Hershey bar and marshmallow didn't work out so well. Grilled cheese sandwiches work out well.

We rarely cook over the open fire anymore, lol!!

Well, I can't speak to which brand is better....have no idea what ours is. I do know we have the double because that is the only one that will hold my bride's homemade bread. Also, I didn't see it mentioned anywhere but here's a couple tips...preheat the pie iron. It cooks the first one better. And we spray non stick stuff (like Pam) on the iron every other pizza pocket. Otherwise they tend to stick.

we inherited a single square one. must be cast iron from the weight of it. any really good sites for recipes for them. I didnt realize they can be used for so much

We have one round and one square. I personally like the square one 'cause you can pack more food in. They both work equally well. We don't use loaf bread, but rather we use the pillsbury tubes of dough. The brand of irons we have are Rome cast iron. The aluminum ones are worthless, in my opinion. Our local Girl Scout camp had aluminum ones and they didn't work well and didn't last long.
