B&W Hitch

So, we are upgrading to a 5r as we are going to do the Mud Finder mobile app challenge this year. Lots of places to go.

Anyway, we upgraded our TV as well.

We got a B&W 5th wheel hitch online. I wasn't thinking there was as much to put together.

We got it together though.

I have a question.

The shaft that goes down into the throat of the mount on the truck has a bar that is inside of it that has a bolt connected to it.

You tighten this bolt and it pulls that bar up applying pressure on the release that you use from in the driver's side wheel-well.

While it all seems to work, it just seems weird. That pin that goes through the hitch's bar doesn't have a notch or the like so it seems weird to just crank down pressure on a smooth bar. It calls for 60lbs of trq.

Is this really just to keep the release from popping open?

Is this making any sense?

Thanks.

Good question

I never torqued mine - just snugged it down - the pin isn’t going to “ release “ on its own - maybe it’s to minimize movement although there wouldn’t be much Les

I have always torque mines down, why, because the manufacturer said to do it, you suppose to have a cut in the middle to allow the bar to go in and if you don't I would give them a call. Some hitches bolt to the bed which keep it in the bed, well the companion hitches if you have the slider like I do it should or you would want to be able to lock that down It's just safety for you and other and I wouldn't want to change what they have tested and proving.

Both of my turnover mounts do not have a notch either. I do torque mine and have had no problems.

Mine does not have a notch either. However, I tried to torque mine to 60ftlbs and it started to bend the top flange of the hitch. I checked the torque wrench against 2 other ones I have and its within a couple lbs of my other ones. I believe I got like 40ftlbs on it and I've tried to pull the release handle out and there is no way it will move. I've checked the torque a couple times a year and it's still good. Mine has been torqued in the bed for nearly 3 years and hasn't moved a bit.

The torque spec is not to hold the hitch rod in, it will not come out even with no force on it. It is to snug the hitch to the bed and preclude any movement of the shaft in the receiver and mitigate noise. My hitch is about a year old and says to torque to 60 ft lbs. Maybe the spec has been changed from older units. I torque mine to 50 just to make sure I don't damage the pin because the tolerance for the ball is tighter than that of the hitch shaft.

Yeah, I had mines for about year now so maybe they did change the torque specs.

I wonder if the spec is different between the OEM mounts (for the trucks with factory pucks and ball) and the universal for the turnover ball?

Mine is the universal and says 80lbs.

The OEM puck system would mitigate movement better and maybe it has a lower torque spec?

Hmmmm, yeah I'm not sure but that would be good to know either way I would do what the specs said 60lbs or 80lbs.
