Electrical problems

I have a 2010 40D. When plugged in everything works but as soon as I disconnect everything goes dead. I just installed new batteries. I checked the inverter and it seems to be working correctly. What could be my problem.

Check wire connections to battery, make sure connections clean and tight. Check the main fuse from the battery, sometime mounted on positive cable from battery. If fuse blown then it wasn't charging while you were connected and battery might be dead. If installed, make sure battery disconnect switch is on. Check charge on battery. Check main fuse in converter, make sure it is accepting power from the battery. Check negative battery connection to frame/converter. These would be the first things I would check. Good luck!

I have checked both 30 amp fuses in battery compartment and checked battery isolation switch and all seems good.

What made you change batteries? (old, shorted out, burned up?)

Have you checked the reverse polarity fuse in the converter?

They were the original batteries and one froze and broke over the winter

I found 3 30 amp fuses by the converter and they are good. Any more suggestions?

Sometimes the positive side of the battery runs to a terminal block before or just after the battery disconnect switch. A point where other wires also come and are bolted down. These junction blocks can actually be a fuse block like this

I actually have 2 of those minus the cover. One on either side of the battery isolation switch. They are working fine. I have voltage going thru them.

You have an inverter/charger it's not just an inverter. Your battery is fed through the charging side of the inverter.......sounds like that part is not working.

Do you have a multi meter to check where the voltage is dropping? Checking through the various points of connection can help isolate where the drop is occurring. Perhaps a bad ground?

I second that idea. A bad connection between ground and the battery would explain a lot.

Found it! The screw that holds the ground terminals to the frame had broken off inside the frame. It was still threaded in far enough to be somewhat secure but not good enough for a good ground connection. Thanks for all the help!
