I have a 2008 Octane toy hauler. Here is my problem when I hook up to shore power the battery does not charge. When the battery gets low the lights go dim, the ac shuts off, the fridge even though its on gas shuts off. I bought a new battery and it does the same thing once the charge is depleted. So I am thinking that the convertor is faulty but would love to here from anyone. I went on line and saw where some people were saying that there was a recall on that year but I didnt receive any notice! I have checked all fuses. So I know its not that simple ! Any tips or suggestions? Thank you all in advance.

I would guess you are correct but you could verify the converter is not charging by checking the volts at the battery while hooked to shore power. It should be reading 13+ volts. Have you checked the fuses?

If your fridge has LED's on the front, is self igniting or has a simple switch to change modes, it needs 12VDC in order to function. Same with the more recent water heaters. The furnace fan is 12VDC too!


You need 12VDC power for practically everything nowadays. My old trailer (1983 build) had all manual appliances. But the trade-off to get rid of the wasteful standing pilots has been reliance on the battery. Throw in the CO & gas leak detector and you've got to keep that battery above 75% charged the whole time you are out in the field.


I've had to pack a 2kw genset to charge the battery on my new trailer. 2-3 hours generator run per day is adequate.

Do any of the 120V appliances work while plugged in? Outlets and microwave are really the only thing that doesn't need 12v power. In the case of the A/C it is probably just the thermostat that needs 12v so when the 12v power goes the thermostat is probably shutting down the A/C.

I agree with Gomez. Check to see if your converter is even charging your battery. Multimeter is preferred but even just the push button "battery gauge" should give you an idea. It should read full anytime your plugged in to shore power.
