Just bought 2017 Octane SL 272, any others out there?

Hello, I have been lurking on the site for a while. Bought a 2017 Octane SL 272 back in February. Taking it our for our first trip next weekend. Not new to camping however, this is my first brand new toy hauler. I don't see many posts about this model in the forums. Are there many folks that have chosen this model? We like it for the bunks and extra sleeping capacity. No mods yet however, I am sure I will get started after this first trip out in it.

If anyone already has this model, is there anything I should be looking out for?

We're looking at one too. What are you towing it with?

Thanks for the welcome! TV is a 2015 Silverado 1500. Lifted with 35s but I've beefed up the rear suspension and re-geared to 4.56 from 3.42. Pulls like a beast for a half ton! Click image for larger version

What’s your experience been with the 272 after one season? I just traded in my 26rr for this. I hope I upgraded. Any advice?

Hey, I just purchased a 2018 Jayco 272, and will pick it up this weekend. I am planning to pull it with my 2017 F150, 3.5 EcoBoost. I would love to her how your experience with the 272 has been, and your towing experience with a half ton. Thanks.

Well your dry weight is around 7k. Your tongue weight is over 1k and your cargo weight is almost 3k.

Is that within your trucks peramiters?

The max tow is 11,500 lbs and the tongue is 1,220 lbs with a WDH. I believe I can stay under these limits, as well as the truck’s GVWR if I use the WDH and load properly using the garage area to keep the tongue weight around 12% of trailer weight. I don’t expct to use all of the trailer’s capacity, as my main cargo will be a kayak trailer with a couple of Old Town Predators at maybe 450 lbs. And, for about 100 mile trips on flat roads- an EZGO Workhouse at about 1,000 lbs. We live in Florida and won’t have to battle the high mountains passes like out west.

Thanks!

What’s your payload capacity? That’s where most 1/2 tons get in trouble. You tongue weight plus your passengers and whatever else your truck is carrying in the bed and can should be added in that total and subtracted from your payload.

Payload is 2,030. That should leave me about 800 ponds for my wife & myself, fuel, etc. with a 12% tongue weight based on a 10,000 load. I currently don’t expect to max the trailer’s weight limit. I am hoping to get some “real world” feed back from behind the wheel as well.

Man, I have been sleeping on this thread, sorry y'all!

First season with the 272 has been great. I really haven't made a lot of mods yet. There are several things I plan to add this coming season. Shelving being probably the most needed. I plan to add removable shelves next to the sink and fold out sofa between the happy jack set up. I want them to be removable for when we haul cargo. We have a golf cart that we take to the lake with us each time and the garage worked perfect for that. We are now into ATV season here so we have taken one trip with our ATVs so far and that also worked flawlessly.

I did decide to upgrade my TV. The Silverado 1500 pulled fine however, I encountered some strong cross winds one day coming home from the lake that made the trailer sway more than I was comfortable with. It was then that I decided to move up to a Ram 2500 Mega Cab with the Cummins Diesel. Boy what a difference. No sway at all and no worries when towing. We are now set up for long trips and better peace of mind. Pic of new TV.

I am not familiar with the 26rr so I could not tell you if it is an upgrade or not. I can tell you though that we have thoroughly enjoyed the 272. We always have a toy in the garage no matter where we go. It pulls great and has plenty of room. We have slept 10 in the camper a couple of times and it worked well. The camper is built well. I have only had one thing break which I will have the guys look at when I take it in for my annual inspection next month. That was the TV Antenna. The piece inside that rotates the antenna broke some how. I think it may have been adjusted improperly and was still engaged while a small limb drug the top of the camper and spun the antenna. This is the only logical thing I can think of that would have broken the internal housing. Antenna still works, I just can't rotate it now.

Man I'll tell you, it didn't take long for me to decide to upgrade my TV to a 3/4 ton. I went with the Ram 2500 Cummins. Night and day difference in towing. While my Silverado had plenty of power to pull the 272 and the suspension to hold it, the truck just didn't have enough weight to it to keep the 272 stable in windy conditions. I experienced it pushing my truck on the road and I did not like that feeling. I was using a weight distribution hitch and that worked well, just didn't do much with cross wind. I still use the same WDH with my Ram 2500 however, the 272 no longer pushes my truck. The 2500 has enough weight to it that it controls the 272 with ease. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. I am hoping I can get by with mine for a few years pulling in the Florida, Alabama, Georgia area. I will be happy in the 60 tp 65 mph range.
