Onan 5500

This is my first trailer. It is a Jayco Octane T32H. So far only a few minor issues. My biggest questions are about the generator.
A) My hours gauge on the control panel has never worked. Do I have to bring my RV in for warrenty to fix this? Is there anything I can try myself first?
B) I think it is time for an oil change. Is that something I can do myself? I am mechanically inclined but I have never worked on a generator before. If I can do it do I have to order the filter from Onan?

I have some other things going on but I am mostly fixing them myself if I can. I am dreading using my warrenty. I have read nothing but horror stories. That and I'd prefer to do things on my own because I can tell that RV techs are hacks. I did buy an extended warrenty but mostly to cover big ticket items later on down the road.

There should be another hr meter on the geny and yes changing oil is a diy job. As to the meter on the panel make sure it's not just a loose wire.

Changing the oil is simple, just drain and refill. However, on my unit the dipsticks mounted it right where the drain is inaccessible because it’s right on the frame so I have to pump my used oil out the dipstick hole.

My hour meter has never worked either. When it was under warranty I was going to take it in but decided it wasn’t worth the hassle since my dealer is 100 miles away.

Cool guys. Thank you. Where can I pick up an oil filter? Do I have to buy it from Onan?

No, but I personally always bought theirs. You can get it at most RV dealers. Amazon is another source.

Onan Gennie has a 3 year warranty from Cummins-Onan. I would never tale to your dealer for actual service on the generator. My Cummins dealer has been great, mother board went nuts and spiked voltage. Burned up the transfer switch, dealer had no clue?? Agree on loose wire to hour meter. I have 800 hours on our 5500, remember that at high altitude's it decreases output.

Our 2006 HR we never had an hour meter would have been nice. We just change oil and filter once a year. I think at 600 hours we adjusted valves! Thanks
