Seismic issues
Hello everyone,
I'd like to share some info on my Jayco 2015 Seismic 3210 toy hauler. This is a 5th wheel.
We bought the unit used in 2016 as a trade in from a dealer in Indiana. We bought this to haul our motorcycle, which we did once or twice, then sold the bike but kept the hauler. In November 2020 my wife and I traveled to Arizona for 4 weeks and then back home to Indiana. On the was home we heard a loud crack of sorts, pulled over for a quick inspection, and saw nothing amiss. We continued on and my message center on the Silverado lit up telling me to service the trailer brake system. Again, I hit my brakes and they seemed to be working properly. However the message would not go away.
Once we made it home, as I was backing onto the storage pad, we heard another crack. After leveling out the unit, I crawled underneath it and observed a broken shackle plate at the front end of a leaf spring, where it connects to the MorRyde stabilizer between the axles. Both plates at the shackle were split wide open. I then looked across to the other side and saw the same scenario on the opposite axle. Then I found the trailer brake loom, running along the frame above the springs (factory mounted), was completely cut in 2 from the eye of the loose spring pack slamming against the frame. Thank God for the Jake brake on the Duramax! Never noticed any sway or wobble from the tires.
I contacted MorRyde and spoke with a tech about this. He told me they see this all too often. He then asked if I had the WET BOLT system, meaning all bolts with grease fittings (Zerk fittings), to which I said no. I had a dry system. He then asked if the plates that let go were 1/4", which they were. Then he told me when they ship their shackle kits to the RV manufactures it includes 1/2" shackle plates with the WET BOLT system. This is a matter of the manufactures chincing on what they use during assembly.
He told me I would need to upgrade to this WET BOLT system with the heavier shackles. I gave him the model number of the stabilizer to which he did tell me that is the appropriate stabilizer, only with B/S bolts and plates. I ordered in the correct package from a dealer, around $158.00 or so, and did the swap myself. I also repaired the brake system wire loom.
I thought I would share this on the forum for all to read, no matter what type of trailer you pull. Check your systems!!
