Can you give us your year and model?
I don't have specifics for you on the toy haulers, but I assume you're referring to an outside wall, so over length would penetrate the outside. Most fiberglass sided RVs have aluminum studs and the wall size on the exterior is pretty thin, couple inches. I would use a stud finder to find a stud then I would predrill the wall with a small bit and see if i'm in a solid wood or hollow aluminum stud. If solid wood, then anything 1 1/2" or less should be good. If in aluminum, then I would use a caliper (or icepick or metal coathanger) to determine the depth. Then I would consider some type of hollow-wall anchor, as the aluminum will be pretty thin.
