It's hard to find a mega cab in a long bed format. I have a 2500 mega cab ( love it) but a 6.5 ft bed

I have to use a superglide hitch, but it works well.

So, I watched the video of what they have done, and make no mistake, I like the new trucks, but from what they said, upgrading an older truck would have most of the same benefits. I won't say what I tow with (to avoid flaming), but I always find these discussions interesting.

you're talking about changes to intake & exhaust, adding a computer, and presumably something for the brakes to do that then? Just curious -we are totally new to all this and I will be purchasing a truck that meets the specs on paper to start with -so I can show my wife we are good and the family is as safe as can be (then I can start playing and upgrade/mod from there...)

Ram does not offer a long bed with the mega-cab yet, so I assume a sliding hitch would be required.

Practicality/cost versus cool - no clear answer. My truck is low trim - quite comfortable, so for me there is no need to pay for more.

The manufacturer websites have tools showing payload and towing capacities for different configurations. Those will show you what you need.

I think whether you mod an older truck or go with a newer truck with factory spec capability depends on how knowledgeable you are and how much time you have.

I don't have enough of either one, so I got a truck with factory spec capability that allowed me a comfortable margin.

If I was starting out new, I would start with a truck that was spec'd to paper specs as well, but I already had a clean 2000 7.3 Ford diesel, crew cab 4x4. And yep, we have upgraded the intake, exhaust, turbo, computer, brakes, as well as a custom transmission. It has the exhaust brake and is maintained in as new condition as possible, and works well for us. When it does wear out and we need a truck, I personally will likely go with the F-450. I don't care about brand, but it seems to be the heaviest platform and I am more familiar with Fords, having towed with them since 1991.
Whatever you buy, I don't think you can go wrong in today's market. Keep looking at options and see if you can catch a deal. Finding a one or two year old used one could be good as well. Let someone else take that initial depreciation.

thanks -that's exactly what I'm doing this morning. Found a 2013 Ram 3500 Diesel Dually with the Aisin transmission. Only 30,000 km on it, $25k under the sticker. And I even like the colour!

F450. The pickup models ONLY come in Crewcab, diesel, DRW (chassis models for commercial may come differently).
Depending on your budget, I'd recommend looking for the 2012-2013, even 2014 model years.
I searched for a year and found the right one (2013) for me at an even 50K, with low miles last fall.
Reason - 18,000lb Jayco Recon ZX 39' Toy hauler.
F450 tow rated (and stops) up to 24,7000 beautifully. A full 33,000 GCVW gives me plenty of margin for Pin weight AND misc cargo in the truck itself.
I knew what I wanted in an RV, so went looking for the right TV to start with.
The Chev 3500 DRW and the Dodge Ram 3500 DRW pretty much in the same class, but I'm a Ford guy.
at 16,500 I think the F350DRW would probably do just as well.

One other quick thought re the F450, it has an amazingly tight turning radius, if tht's important to you.

Way smaller than my old F350 7.3L SRW, and tighter than the 2006 Chev 3500 Duramax SRW my son drives.

I've heard that about the f450's -very interesting.

The deal on the Ram 3500 fell through and I have kept searching. Found two 2012 F350 DRWs that should easily handle the load (other than tight turns I guess!) and have a friend heading out to view them for me today. With any luck I will have one of them by the weekend!

Finally Over!!!

After 3 weeks, I gave up and went with a new 1-ton diesel dually from GMC. Picked it up Friday, and we get the 3210 On May 6th.

May long weekend is fast approaching and I think we will actually be ready for this. Booked in with a group of about 40 people for dry camping and quadding out in the sand dunes of a provincial park.... Cannot wait!!!!

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I almost ended up with not enough truck for this rig, but I'm pretty sure this will be more than adequate now!
