2020 Precept 31UL Storage Compartment Melted!

Discovered a gaping 2”x5” hole in the pass through portion of the forward compartment after driving all day. Apparent cause was heat from the exhaust pipe directly below which melted the plastic material. Luckily nothing caught fire! Anyone else have a similar issue?

I have seen several posts about missing or defective heat shields above that catalytic converter. Crawl under your rig and have a look. If its missing, that could definitely cause the problem. Good luck.

Can someone post a picture of the catalytic convertor with a heat shield? This would really help us less technically inclined

In the second photo I posted above, you'll see the exhaust pipe to the left, with the gaping hole in the front pass-thru compartment above. The catalytic converter is a bit out of the photo, further away from the engine. You can see a segment of the galvanized sheet metal that was factory installed, strapped to the frame underneath the compartment, and protected most of the compartment from the exhaust pipe/converter. For some inexplicable reason the factory shield did not extend all the way to the front of my compartment, hence the melting. Otherwise the shield seems to have been effective.

That hole appears to be parallel with the joint, if there is any kind of exhaust leak it would burn a hole into the plastic, doesn't take much. I've seen that happen to "rock shields" where the exhaust is pointed directly at them.

I wondered about that joint. I’ll get it checked out, once I figure out how to patch that hole!

I have contacted Jayco, they did not mention a recall but did agree to pay for repairs to the compartment and upgrades to the heat shield.
