If you're plugged in to shore power you should turn on your house power. Actually I think mine just comes on when I plug in shore power but I can't say for certain that it charges. You turn on the inverter switch when you are not plugged in to shore power and want power to the AC plugs near the bed(s) - that's the standard setup. If your house is turned on and the shore power is plugged in then you don't need the inverter - and for certain the batteries charge then. In a standard setup with one 100 amp lead battery you'll have roughly 50 amps of usable battery power to "invert" to AC and to run your other stuff. My Melbourne came with two batteries so I had roughly 100 amps available. This lasts about 18 to 24 hours with no major use except lights and a cpap machine. Hope that helps.
