They make a special compartment door vent for the Onan 4000 because it draws cooling air from the side. The Onan 5500 draws cooling air from underneath. I got a vent from a Forest River dealer for an Onan 4000 a couple years ago. Here it is installed.

I have the 2016 Jayco Precept 31 UL and haven’t had an issue yet but haven’t really used the generator a lot in hot weather. There are some that have experienced the shut down from heat with the 5500.

I have a 5500 with a compartment door vent and I still have the Genny shutting off when idling and outside temps in the low to mid 90s. I just did my first Genny oil change and used 15w40 (which is what Onan says to use in hot temps), I added some heat shield to the fuel line inside the Genny and also for several feet from the Genny toward the tank and finally moved the idle spring one notch to the left as another thread had mentioned positive results. I have an upcoming trip and really hoping one of those things actually makes a difference.

Let us know how it works. The 5500 draws it’s cooling air from underneath so not sure a vent in the door will help. Which model is your Jayco?

I have an entegra vision 29f (which is essentially a rebranded jayco alante 29f). After the changes the Genny shut down after 30 minutes in 96 degree heat. It did not stay on more than about 10-15 minutes until I got to 91 degree weather and then it ran fine until idling for about 5 minutes at check in, then off. The second day it ran fine all day, but outside temps never got above 92 (all temps according to the dash in the coach). I have seen another option is to remove some of the oil (about a pint), but I'm not sure why that would help. I plan to make a few further adjustments on my return trip, but the forecast is showing lower temperatures for most of the trip.

There is a service bulletin out on a plenum for the 5500 on newer models. I don’t remember seeing anyone saying that it worked for them but it’s probably a better option than the 4000 vent.
