Quite by accident we discovered that if we have an absolutely full fresh tank of water our 31UL handles so much better. It no longer has that sudden 2 foot lunge into oncoming traffic or towards the ditch. No more white knuckles on the wheel, no more stress of when will it do it again and why. Also no more not so lady like expletives from the driver, and wide eyed chuckles from the dear husband.

Long before I bought my first RV, I discussed the issue of partially filled tanks with an experienced RV'er.


The sloshing of 50-200 lbs of water will impact the vehicle.


When I started with my first TT, it was tanks full or tanks empty when we hit the road!


The few times I was forced to run with partial tanks, it was quite unpleasant.


Glad you learned that lesson before it turned into broken parts.

Thanks, but have always traveled with empty fresh and gray tanks, only 5 or so gallons in the black tank.
Really felt an additional 600 or so pounds in the rear would have made it even more difficult to control.
Can't explain it, but love the difference in handling.

Sounds like a load imbalance in your rig. Is the tank aft of the rear wheels or between front and rear? If it is aft of the rear wheels you might get the same effect by loading the unit tail heavy, perhaps you just have too much weight on the steer axle. If between the axles, perhaps you are already tail heavy and have insufficient weight on the steer axle (this second scenario is much more likely to cause handling imbalance). If this is the case, looking at how you are loading cargo in the unit might have the same effect without having to haul around hundreds of pounds of water. Taking your unit through a CAT scale with full and then empty tank might provide some illumination on how this is changing your handling.
