No Heat Pump

Hello, I have a 2002 Jayco Avatar and the heat pump will not come on.

A/C works as it should.

When selecting electric heat, the furnace comes on instead of the heat pump, even setting the thermostat only 1* above room temp.

Ive replaced the thermostat to remove it from the diagnosis. Ive checked all fuses and breakers that I can find.

Are you certain your rig is equipped with a heat pump? 1

If the outside temperature is too cold (I believe that 45 degrees F is the limit) then it will not work, for it will have to work too hard to warm the air. At least that is what I was told by our dealer 8 years ago.

Yeah, its not that cold. It was actually around 60* outside, 70 inside when I was messing with it earlier and still setting the thermostat to elect. Heat and 71 degrees the furnace immediately comes on

Then it has to be the thermostat since there are two different wires. One for the furnace and one for the heat-pump. The control box for the a/c has no connection on how the furnace runs.

I thought the thermostat could be the issue, but Ive replaced it with two brand new ones with no change.

You can let the furnace kick on, slide the slide over to gas while furnace is running and as it continues to run, slide it back to electric. As you slide it back to electric you can hear an audible "click" within the thermostat like a relay or something would be sending a command but the furnace keeps running and no heat pump. Hopefully I described that so that it may make sense.

Thats correct. A white w/ black tracer on the 9 pin plug. The 3 pin connector is for the furnace

I've never had one with pin connectors, they have all been straight wire connections with wire nuts. If the thermostat is sending power to the furnace and not the HP then it has to be a thermostat or wiring issue.

You have cool, high fan, low fan, heat and ground going to the a/c control box and then heat to the furnace. What else is there?

I'd call Coleman and be sure you have the right thermostat.

I didnt call Coleman, but I did pull out the manual. It is in fact a 6535 Series Heat pump and the thermostat is correct for that series.

I have found a service manual. Based off of the symptoms checklist, it recommends that I jump out the two freeze pins. I will do this tomorrow and report back.

Hope that is the issue. As I stated I've never had a rig with a thermostat with plug in connectors. 1

I found a service manual. It appears to be a 6535A series. Following the checklist, I'm starting to think I may have a PC Board issue.
