Outlets don’t work HELP

Hi everyone. My name is Deb and we have a 2015 Jayco precept 31ul. This morning we were cooking and one of our kitchen outlets (by the sink) tripped off. We got it back on but it eventually went out again.

We now have no power to any of our outlet throughout the RV....although we do have power overall. We’re hooked up to an outside source.

We’ve reset all of the breakers as well as checked all of the fuses. Everything seems fine there.

But still no power to the outlets. WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

Deb

How many GFCI outlets do you have. They may need to be reset.

I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know what a GFCI outlet is? Are they the “regular” outlets or is it something specific?

They are used in areas where water is present, like bathrooms and kitchens. They have a small test and reset button on the outlet.

I found one in the bathroom but that’s all I could find. Should I have more than one? If so where else should I look?

I did hit the red reset button on the one in the bathroom and it didn’t stay in....didn’t reset.

I see two outlets in the kitchen, and both say “GFCI protected outlet” but neither has a reset button.

If a GFCI outlet will not reset, then you have no 120 power to that outlet. Turn off all breakers and rest one by one. do the same with the outlet your RV is plugged into.

Are you sure you have power to both sides of the outlet on the post?

There is actually only one GFCI outlet in my unit that has a reset button. It is the one by the kitchen sink. The outlet by the lavatory sink and the 2 in the outside kitchen are all wired to that same outlet. So for example, when the one in my kitchen is tripped, my outside fridge powers down. You may have the same situation where multiple GFCI outlets are dependent on that one receptacle with the reset button.

We’re making progress. I checked the plug to the outside source and we discovered the plug/cord going into the RV looked “burned” .....we have a surge protector on it.

We turned the generator on and the outlets work but obviously we need to fix the plug/cord issue so we’re heading into town to get a new cord.

What thoughts do you have?

What type of cord are you referring to? Do you mean your main power cord to the trailer or are you using an extension cord?

That’s very helpful to know! I guess our only GFCI outlet is the one in the bathroom and the others are wired to it.

Thanks! Moving forward with trying to figure it out.

Were you plugged into 30A or 50A shorepower? If the male end of your cord that plugged into the shore power is what looks burned you will need to replace the male end and take the wire back to where it doesn't look burned. It was caused by overheating at the receptacle which was most likely caused by a loose fitting one. Happens on 30A more often because they are generally used more, are older and wear out.

You need a minimum of a 10 gauge wire to support a 30 amp RV. Anything smaller will overheat like you may have experienced. Also, the shorter the cord the better.

I carry something like this for the times that I need an extension.

https://www.amazon.com/Camco-Extensi.../dp/B000BUU5YU

For a 50 amp unit, you will want a 6-8 gauge extension cord, similar to this.

You only will have 1 maybe 2. They are the masters. They feed other outlets. You must have power on the outlet to reset. Push the test then the reset button. if it does not rest you need to go the the breaker box. Any outlet within 6' of a water supply is on a GFI circuit. Any outside outlet and any outlet in a ground level storage bin. I don't think all of your outlets are on a GFI.

It sounds like you over powered and burned up your "long extension cord" by running too many appliances or fixtures(on too small a cable). It's a good thing you didn't burn up your rig. Which appliances, A/C, heaters, etc. were you running at the time the power shut off when cooking?

This is a long thread with not enough information from the OP to troubleshoot on line. Your Alante is 30a,?, what gauge and how long was your extension cord, what exactly started to burn up/ melt, have you check voltage at your converter, do you know the difference between a fuse and a circuit breaker,etc...
