Question Precept 31UL - General Thoughts?

Hey Gang,

Debating upgrading my order to a Precept 31UL. My local dealer is being aggressive with his pricing, and the step up is not terrible to my wallet.

I like the fact that this coach has a considerable advantage in CCC, as well as the overall robustness of the chassis (tires not being at max PSI/load from the start, likely not at max PSI no matter what I load), etc.

50 amp, 2 ACs, bountiful storage, etc. However, I've never owned a class 'A' before so I don't know what I'm getting into. As I understand it, I'll likely need a SuperSteer and a rear trac bar added, but I'm reading that might be it. Supposedly Ford upgraded the F53 w/ larger diameter sway bars already.

I'm a little hesitant as at least I could reasonably expect the Ford cab on a E450 to be pretty much good to go - w/ the Class 'A' I'm at the mercy of Jayco for most of the whole coach.

So .... what say you guys? I'm leaning towards doing it ... but I'm leery.

I would go for it... as you said, the steering stabilizer and trac bar will be needed, but once you do it should drive similarly. The amount of storage increase should be substantial. You still rely on Ford for the Chassis, but it should be just as reliable as the E450. I would stay away from early model V8s, but since you're ordering, should not be an issue.

I went right from a TT to a class A... no issues, the wife was a school bus driver, so both of us very comfortable driving it.

As long as size, weight, electrical requirements, etc are not a sow stopper for you or differ from how you camp now, I say do it....

We love our 31 UL. I've put a little over 3000 miles on it and decided on upgrading the suspension with Saf-T Plus Steering control, https://supersteerparts.com/products...rol-white.html, and the Super Steer Rear Trac Bar, https://supersteerparts.com/products...8-22k-gvw.html and required bracket. See my thread titled Anyone use an I-pad for navigation for the other mods I've done so far. BTW, read Marks Upgrades for a complete list of what you can spend $$ on.

I have the sofa. Works great for us when we need the sleeper pulled out.

We have the theater seats, as we didn't need the extra bed - pretty small, anyway - and we prefer the recliners for relaxing/watching TV. And they're comfortable enough to sleep on, if needed.

Mine is coming in w/ the sofa - I didn’t want to risk a new order and potentially be waiting for heaven knows how long. Aside from the 2k for them; though I probably would have paid if it didn’t affect the timing.

My 31UL has the sofa. It's not very comfortable. We will be replacing it with theater seating soon

Crap - I really wanted the theater seats but I didn’t want to roll the dice w/ it getting built in a reasonable amount of time in the COVID era. Oh well, it is what it is.

Can somebody post a pic of their electrical compartment? I’m trying to figure out if there is enough room to mount the 50 amp autoformer in that compartment, and how the wire for the coach is connected in there. I’d like to get the 50 amp hardwire kit from Hughes and leave everything in the bay save the cord end on the post.

Coach —> Hughes Watchdog —> Hughes Autoformer —> Pedestal.

Not a precept 31UL, but I did something similar with a 30amp Hughes Autoformer in my 31V. I've since put the hardwire kit but don't have that picture handy.

Pedestal --> Hughes Autoformer --> PI EMS 30 --> Coach

Here is a picture of mine. I have another 9 or so inches to the right of the power wheel.

Updated picture with the hardwire kit installed... for the record, the sewer hose is a brand new/never used spare in the event the main one has an issue. Thought about that after I posted the first picture..

If the autoformer has an issue, it can be removed in a few seconds and the PMI plugged directly into the hardwire kit.

Jayco Precept

We love our 2017 Precept UL but will probably be selling it soon. We just don’t use it enough. Only has about 5000 miles.

Please read all the reviews about Precept 31 UL. I wish I had before pulling the trigger. Especially put a search in Jayco forum for “Jayco Precept 31 UL”
“steering problems.”
If not make sure you take the coach for a drive on interstate at highway speeds, not just just around town.
Good luck, be safe.
