Rear Differential Maintenance Qustion

While contemplating whether or not to change rear diff fluid in my 2017 Precept, F53 22,000 chassis. I came across this in owners manual. Would this apply to pulling a toad? Kinda confusing.

Yes, confusing. Not sure how the rear end would know or care if the engine is at WOT.

Also dont get the 3 months vs 24K miles; that seems to imply constant towing at a time (VERY long trips at a time without rest), like a commercial truck. Never heard of changing rear fluid at 3 month.

My personal opinion (and thats all this is) would be that toading around doesnt apply to these extreme conditions.

But I do believe drivetrain component oil should be changed at some point in time.

When I was a fleet mechanic, we changed all of the fluids, except coolant, once a month. We also sent them out for testing. If a truck wasn't moving, it costs money instead of making money. I would think you could scale that back on a recreational vehicle versus a working dog.

Transmission and rears oil change every month? weird. Is this some sort of extreme/city operation?

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going with the "Rear axle fluid change or level check not required unless leak detected or submerged in water". Gotta believe axle fluid change at 24,000 mi or 3 months is for a different type of commercial application and not for an RV. Thanks again guys. Now on to the transmission fluid and filter change! Hopefully that is more straight forward!

Ford says 105,000 miles for axle fluid change.

www.motorcraftservice.com

Mileage differs depending on conditions. Police vehicles, livery, taxi and delivery vehicles have different intervals. As far as towing, that's considered supplemental service. They state that no service is needed due to the fluid used until the 105K interval. 75W140 Full Synthetic is recommended. If you have no leak, fluid levels should remain the same so no change is required.

This is per FoMoCo.

I can see those trucks needing fluids changed more often, with them starting and stopping constantly, all day long. That would wreak havoc on a transmission. But when you send the fluids out to get tested and get the results, did you adjust the change intervals if the fluids still tested good?

This was back in the early 80's. They did not change intervals. It was managements decision when to pull a truck off of of the road for repairs. I just gathered the samples, never was involved with the results. This was my first job out of tech school. The trash trucks ruined me, been a card carrying carpenter for over 25 years now. Smells much nicer.

Rear diff gear oil is much cheaper than a prematurely worn out rear diff, or one that leaves you broke down and stranded on the side of the road. I changed the rear diff fluid on my truck at 1000 Mike's and was absolutely floored and how much metal was in it and attached to the magnet. I did the same to my transmission at 1000 miles. Get that break in/wear in metal flushed out of there. A little PM time and money will save you lots later down the road.
Just my $.02 worth....
