Shelf Addition - Precept 31UL

Folks -

In order to utilize some dead space and add shelves for bread, chips, canned goods, etc., I'm thinking of building a removable shelf unit to hang above the sink next to the pantry that's on the slide. It has to be removable, as the pantry slides over the wall there when closed. The wallboard is pretty flimsy, and I don't know what's behind there, so I'm not sure what sort of fasteners to use. I think there is some wood where the wall meets the ceiling, and if so it shouldn't be an issue to mount some hangers. For the bottom support, I'm thinking of using a strip of 1/2" wood across the width of the shelving. It can't be any thicker than a half-inch, as that's the clearance between the back of the pantry and the wall.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Mickey

Mickey,

I had to find an inside picture of the 31UL, as I ave a different floorplan. I would grab a studfinder and check as you may have a stud just next to the pantry that slides behind the faucet. You can also push on the wall and maybe tell as well. The studs will be 2x2 or 2x3ish. The corner will certainly have one, and as you said, the top near the ceiling, but you may get lucky and have one right next to the pantry.

Thanks, Mike. The wall is pretty hollow, and the bathroom wall is behind it. I think what I'm going to do is make a shelf unit that will sit on the counter behind the sink; that way I won't have to worry about mounting it. Still mulling it over. Here's a pic:

Mickey,

I made this for my wife back when she was working as a hair dresser. Simple 1xs, in this case red oak, then stained. she uses it at home now and its mounted on the wall, but used to sit on her station. I have used these things and they hold very well. I have them holding my soundbar up in the RV with no holes in the wall. Combine the two and I think you have a good option.

Thanks, Michael - kinda what I was thinking of putting together. Pretty sure I'll be able to match the stain to the cabinets, so it will look like it wasn't a total bodge job. And I'm really leaning toward letting it sit on the counter, as that's pretty substantial. Plenty of vertical space to afford room for taller containers (hand lotion, soap, etc.) and still have room for most anything we'd have. And when pulling the slide in for travel and storage, I can place it in the shower with other items.

Mickey, I had good luck with Sherwin Williams custom matching a stain for us when I built my desk. See the thread here.
