Shorter wife can't safely drive

The driver's seat in our 2016 Alante is bolted directly to the floor and the dealer has told us it can't be moved.

I'm 5'11' and have to move the seat all the way forward to drive. Cathy is 5'4" and can only reach the pedals by sitting on the very edge of seat. To drive, she places a big pillow behind her back which I think is unsafe.

I do all the driving but we're leaving on a 6,600 trip at the end of August and a break from driving on those long legs would be welcome.

I'm hoping one or two of my friends has encountered this problem and will offer some advice for making Cathy's driving safer.

Thanks!

Make a steel plate (size accordingly) and move the seat holes forward. You might have to make some bushings from 1/2" pipe and may need some new bolts and nuts.
Where there is a will there's a way!

Thanks ALJO, but I'd have more luck walking on water then performing your suggestion. I forgot to mention the dealer mentioned an outfit close to us that does makeovers for disabled drivers. I may persue that route but I'm hoping to avoid the expense.

Try a machine shop take can make the plate for you and what you need on bolts, you can compare the two places for pricing. As long you can handle a wrench you should be OK.
So back to my Jay Feather, I am giving her a complete overhaul for the last 14 days. So she'll be ready in a week for travelling again. An RV is just like a home, you can make it your own.

I had a fabricator look into moving the seat forward, but he declined to do it. He said that any modifications to the seats in the cab had to be DOT / DOH approved, otherwise the insurance company could decline coverage. Same thing for anything that effected the seat belt bolts.

I didn't understand everything that he said about lateral forces and sheer factors, but I gather that there are regulations regarding the stresses that an accident places on seat and seat-belt mountings.

Oh well....

The Driver seat in the Precept has 2 options for mounting the seat. I haven't checked personally but there were others that had the same issue you are having and in the Precept were able to move the seat. I would call Jayco and ask them if the Alante has the same seat set up as the Precept, Dealers aren't always...... let say..... truthful.

Good luck

Unfortunately the Alante's seat came with no options. It's bolted directly to the floor. We've already started discussing moving up and if we stay with Jayco, it will be a Precept. We've plenty of time on the road to further the discussion. Thanks!

I have a 2017 Alante 31V and this is a super easy fix.

The seat is bolted to a mount, I removed the seat belt receptacle and the four bolts that mounted the seat to the base and moved it forward three inches or so. There were already holes in place, dropped the bolts back in and tightened them up. I needed to supply one more bolt and nut. Take a look at what I'm talking about on your rig, 10 minute fix max. I wish I had pics, it's so simple.

All this is done on the inside of the rig.

Thanks OutCole'd, they must have added that configuration to the Alante in 2017. Our 2016 26x does not.

I'd take a real good look at it. I bet it's the same.

I remember reading about this a few months ago on here. The 2016 should also be adjustable to existing holes but maybe that was just for the 31+' Alantes?

At 5'10" I just barely reach. My gf at just 5'1" needs a pillow.

I do not have a motorhome. I did have a custom van at one time with the same problem. The seat turned 360 degrees and the pedestal base was offset from the center.

If the seat pedestal was configure like my van, could you turn the base 180 degrees and would it move the seat closer to the pedals?

Search for the thread "Anyone else vertically challenged?" and as OutCole'd said it is a pretty simple fix. If your seat is a power seat then I would find it hard to believe that Jayco used a different seat on the Alante than they did on the Precept during the 2016 model year. If in fact it is different then skip your dealer and call Jayco Motorized Customer Service directly and explain your problem to them. They will help you find a satisfactory solution. Good luck to you because if you have a partner who is willing to share the driving then it will all be worth it.

What about those blocks they sell to attach to the pedals? If they are even still sold, I haven't seen them in years. They still may not give you enough though.

We'll get our rig back from the dealer next week and do another check but what I've been posting about the configuration has come from them. I will call Jayco Monday morning. Thank you.

Tmmcouple, I looked for them online but wasn't successful. Will do again, but expand locally (thinking woodworker).

Don't just listen to them, look it at when you get it home. They will tell you know because they don't want the liability. It's there.
