Shower drain leak

Talk to me about the shower drain. I’m getting a bit of leakage from the threads at the top. The metal “nut” (purple) appears to be tight and it is not leaking around the black washer at the top.

It’s literally leaking around the threads where it tightens (red).

It’s also not the white piece.

Now- I unscrewed it entirely and there was a white foam gasket on the top side that was entirely wet. I think this is where/in place of plumbers putty that typically would be used.

Is there any harm in adding plumbers putty?

I have added plumber's putty to the threads on my kitchen fixture with no problems. What I have found really stops the real minor PITA leaks is Flex Seal, if you have room enough to use it.

Back the nut off an inch or so and pull the gasket down , roll a golf ball size ball of plumbers putty out on a flat surface with the palm of your hand until it's the circumference of the drain, wrap it around the threads at the shower floor and tighten the nut. Alternately, Rector Seal will work as well, back the nut off and paint a thich layer on the threads as high up as possible, tighten the nut and you should be good.
