Towing w/ Precept

Anyone towing with their Precept? If you are, what are you towing and how does it preform? I've heard there are weight issues with the Precept.

We are having a Roadmaster base plate, Ready Brute w/brake system installed on our '13 Wrangler next week to pull behind our Precept 31 UL.
I'll update when we have a couple of miles on.

We are towing a smart car. We don't even notice the tiny little car behind us.

We towed our Smart Car behind our Precept throughout Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. It's a very light vehicle, only 2200 pounds so don't know how relevant it is to your situation. We had no problems using the braking system on the motorhome. Do you have a specific question?

Just wanted to see if there are limitations to how much and how well the 31ul tows.
I know there isn't a lot of room for error with the 31's weight and axle ratings. The dealer will tell you it's got a 5k hitch, but that doesn't translate into what it can, or should tow.
So, like always, I ask the people who do it, not the one's that sell it.

The Smart Car is so light we don't even notice it. Haven't seen any other Precepts on the road so would be curious to know what others are towing. I personally would like a slightly larger car but my husband wanted the Smart Car. Overall we really like our Precept but, since it's our first motorhome, have no other frame of reference. It handles really well up to 65 mph. We have the 31ul.

Joe, here is some info that may help. Keep in mind the V-10 is used in many, many RV vehicles and tow vehicles that travel all over the US. We had the V-10 in our F-350 pulling a 37' 5er weighing gross at 21,500 average. Climbed all over the Rockies in CO without issue (the V-10 in the F350 was smaller than what we have in the 31UL).
Now we have the 31 UL and tow our Jeep. We haven't been to the mountains yet but have absolutely no concern about "getting over the top".
Here is a CAT scale ticket:
Steer----------------5460
Drive---------------12040
Trailer (Jeep)-------4220
Gross--------------21720
On board was Mary & our Tess (80# Golden), 3/4 full propane, 2/3 full fresh water, 7/8 full gas, 1/2-2/3 full fridge, 1/4 full closets and drawers, empty black and grey.
The drive axle would normally fall in around 11600# when we are travelling with maybe 10 gallons of fresh water on board. We had the fresh water on because we were headed to a dry camping weekend.

Towing a Jeep Wrangler

We tow a Jeep Wrangler with our 31UL and I turn on my rear camera to remind myself it is back there. Hooking up and un-hooking takes about 5 minutes with the telescoping arms on the BlueOx tow bar.

We tow an 06 Saturn Vue AWD V6 with a blue ox tow bar behind our 2015 31ul Precept. With aprox 2000 miles of towing I still occasionally check the rear camera and my tpms monitor to make sure its still back there. We got home last week from a 1000 mile trip thru Ohio, KY, Tn and back to lake erie with no problems and averaged 7.0 MPG. I usually cruise at 62mph.

Towing a 2002 VW Rabbit on an Acme EZ Tow dolly with our 2015 Precept 31UL. So far, no problems with towing, but we have only been on the east coast so far.

I'm not towing yet but curious. What made you use a dolly instead of flat towing?

No need for a brake controller and less requirements of what I can and can't tow 4 on the floor. I've got an old Ford Escape that is not recommended for 4 on the ground towing, and the dolly is the best option for me is all.

I haven't purchased a dolly yet and have been confused by the price ranges they go for. I've seen everywhere between $1,200.00 to $4,000.00.
How's the Acme holding up for you?

The Acme EZ tow has performed very well. The only issue encountered was that one of the rubber gaskets that holds the tail lights in the frame cutout was lost. The immediate remedy was duck tape. Acme replaced the gasket immediately at no cost and also supplied zip ties to provide extra protection against a loose gasket.
Aside from that, I learned that one must cinch the front tire straps VERY tightly to prevent wheel loosening. That was part of my education, not a fault with the dolly.
As with any towing, check the vehicle being towed at every stop.
Happy RV'ing!

Our toad is a Jeep Wrangler. 3200lbs using a stehl tow dolly. We traveled from Seattle WA. to Sturgis, SD using I-90 the whole way. We lost count of the mountain passes we drove up and over. The continental divide was the steepest with the Fourth of July pass in Montana a close second. The 31UL did a great job for us. Hope this helps.
