The DSI ignitor is an arc style, and you're hearing the spark. You may or may not be able to see it, depending on how bright of a day it is. It's just like the sparkers on grills. The system will go through an ignition cycle, and if it doesn't light, you have to turn the switch off, and back on again to start the cycle over again. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 if the propane hasn't been used for a while. The gas smell bothers me a little.
Our board has a cover on it, and I've never looked under it, so I'm no help on what the lights mean.
