Water Heater Not Operating on Propane

I hear the igniter firing but no flame. I smell propane when I remove the cover. Should I see the spark from the electronic starter? I get the DSI light.

Is the igniter a glow plug type igniter or does it click numerous times unti ignition occurs? I smell propane so I do not think it is the gas valve not opening.

There appears to be 2 lights on the water heater control board, can anyone tell me what they are and when they should be lit.

I have since discovered that the gas is not working AND the electric components of the water heater are bothNOT working.

It appears I was to quick to post last post. The electric is working, just takes longer than the propane to heat. This is understandable. Still burner will not light and I see no spark? If the igniter is dirty will I hear a click or is the click a result of the arc?

The DSI ignitor is an arc style, and you're hearing the spark. You may or may not be able to see it, depending on how bright of a day it is. It's just like the sparkers on grills. The system will go through an ignition cycle, and if it doesn't light, you have to turn the switch off, and back on again to start the cycle over again. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 if the propane hasn't been used for a while. The gas smell bothers me a little.

Our board has a cover on it, and I've never looked under it, so I'm no help on what the lights mean.

When I turn the switch for gas water heater on and go outside to the water heater I hear a series of 3 thumps 10 seconds apart, then the DSI LIGHT comes on an it is faulted out. My question is when the spark igniter is supposed fire, should I hear a series of rapid clicks like my space heater? I hear nothing from the igniter. The propane smell I believe is the gas valve being open ready for an ignition. I tried to find a voltage going to the igniter, I believe there is no voltage present when the igniter should have voltage and be firing. I do not beleve it is the igniter itself. I think it is the board. I am traveling in Oregon, cannot find a replacement igniter board.

I was able to locate a new board here in Eugene Oregon. I installed it and it is up and running.
