6v battery mod for 2012 jayco 197

Need help on where to place two 6v batteries in a box on the tongue of the 197. Note that spare tire is in the front. I was thinking of moving tire to back but the bumper is not a full square bumper. Not sure if there is enough backbone for a tire holder. Any advice would be great. New owner and new to forum.

We had a 17C with a similar bumper and were told by the service dept. manager at our dealer that the weight limit for that type of bumper was 200#. FWIW

It would be great if you could move the propane tank up close to the tongue jack. This would give a wide spot on the tongue to mount a metal box even large enough to eventually mount four each GC2 6V golf Cart batteries...

Another good point here is the front wall wall of the trailer is a pass thru storage area where you can mount INVERTER, FUSE BLOCKs, 12VDC SUB PANEL, etc to support all kinds of camping off the power grid ideas that will be within just afew feet of the battery bank.

Consider this typical smaller trailer setup for running your home entertainment center and some other 120VAC items from two drops from an INVERTER that is direct connected to the battery/

A typical 48-inch metal battery box install for this size trailer might look something like this

food for thought...

Looks great. Will be on the hunt for a reasonable priced truck box. Just wondering about tongue weight. Trailer is at 425 and I am rated for 600. Those 6v are heavy. Am I pushing it?

Hello. Welcome to the forum. I have a 2012 197 too! I put two big 12v RV batteries on mine. I was running out of time so I just built an ugly wooden box ahead of the propane tanks.

A friend took a look at my back bumper and suggested I could bolt a 2x6 to it to give a bit more protection from a bump. I looked and looked for a tool box that will hold these two batteries, but no luck. Had I bought two normal size one, no problem, as PLANO makes a nice plastic one that I had on my 2008 197.

I wouldn't mind being able to move the spare to the back. Keep us posted on what you come up with.

Rink, I like the box set up they made for you. Is the white box one of the plastic ones they sell for batteries? It looks like it can be locked on both sides. Very nice.

Murph, yep the box is the harder plastic boxes they sell for the 6v batteries. As well, it does lock on both sides.
