I really like that modification. I have been bouncing around ideas in my head on where I could mount OLD GLORY and did not think of this. If you don't mind I would like to use your idea on my Jayco TT...

Here is a picture of the flag setup I have when we go camping. I use a 2'X3' flag mounted on a 3/4" PVC pipe. I do have the flag mounting arm drilled so I could install a 3'X5' flag if I desire. Driven into the ground is a 3' section of 5/8" rod which slips nicely into the 3/4" PVC. The whole thing is glued except the long upright that just slips into the 45 degree fitting that is glued onto the actually flag mount arm. This allows me to pull the unit apart for ease of storage.

To drive the 5/8" rod into the ground I purchased a 24" piece of 3/4" threaded pipe. I then screwed on a standard coupler and then a 3/4" plug into the open end of the coupler. This rod pounder works very well in installing the rod into the ground. I did grind one end of the rod to a blunt point for ease of installation into the ground.
