Andersen Levelers Mod

I recently purchased a set of Andersen Levelers, primarily because of the positive comments posted here on the JOF.

I haven't used them yet, but wanted to add some ropes to aid in removing them when getting ready to leave a CG.

I wanted to attach a rope to the chock for safety considerations.
I'm guessing that there will be times that I'll need to adjust the trailer to remove pressure from the chocks to remove them prior to pulling them from underneath the levelers.
The attachment of a rope is intended to avoid having to put your hand under or inline with the tire during this type of scenario.

I contacted Andersen Hitch and they were very helpful in suggesting where a hole could be drilled and confirmed that drilling holes would not null & void any warranty.

I've attached ropes to both the Levelers and chocks.
As/ Andersen Hitch's recommendations, I drilled a hole through the small hole near the top on the tall side of the leveler. This allows the rope to be extended from either side of the levelers.
I drilled and attached a rope to the tall side of the chock (instead of the side) again to allow rope access for any positioning the chock may be placed in.

I used a 1/8" drill bit for drilling the holes. The rope lengths are in the range of 2' - 3' with loops tied at the ends.

Nice idea You may want to check the length on the Anderson's, I had to cut them to fit between the two axles. I cut mine just before the smallest hole. A circle saw worked well.

Like a charm and every time I am out. Hardest part was learning to move inches & not feet to level like you do with legos. I have not been to any camps that they where not tall enough. Kartchner Caverns AZ was close, I was at the top to level, I planned to add a lego block under if I needed to. I also use the large bubble on the front of the 5W and watch it as it comes to center - IMHO a must with the Andersons. I can do it all from the front seat, set the TV breaks and get out to block, DW normally blocks before I can get out.

Jeff,

No, you should only need one set to raise/level the low side of the trailer.

Depends on whether or not you have the wide stance axles - you'll need two if you have the wide stance. Learned that with lego blocks vs. Anderson's, but the same concept applies

Neat idea. For us, it isn't abnormal to rain overnight so those ropes could often be wet, soggy and muddy. What I do is, have my Husband take the weight off the chocks, then kick them with my foot under the trailer. I then grab them as our last step after he's pulled forward and stick them in the Andersen bag and we're off.

Yes, a ramp goes under each wheel on the low side. Anderson has several packages but bottom line is one ramp for each wheel. I got mine on Amazon and the "set was 1 ramp 1 wedge" so I needed two "sets". I have read Anderson sells a set that has 2 of each, another with 2 & some rubber, and a carry bag. Some posts talk about them sliding on hard surfaces but I have never had the problem.

The kick method is definitely an alternative approach. Hadn't thought of that.
If the ropes don't work out I can always remove them and go to your kick method.

If the ropes are long enough and you put a loop on the free end, you could put an easily reached hook just under the side of the trailer and hang the ropes out of the mud.

Just checked to see if they fit between the wheels.
They fit with about 1" clearance - do you think that is sufficient clearance?

I left mine uncut a couple times and uneven ground made them hard to get in. I just cut them and it made them easier to use.

I've used the anderson levelers for a couple of years. Most of the time they're great. I do get a little concerned when I need to go all the way to the edge for maximum height - looks like it would be hard on the tires?

I really like the Andersen Levelers. They work great. I just drive off mine though. Andersen says it's ok to do. So far so good.

Right but you need to remove the chock first. This is what the original poster is using the rope for, to pull the chock out after getting weight off of it.
