Simple Bread Shelf Mod

So here's another mod that doesn't really cost anything if you have scrap wood laying around like I do. My wife had asked not long ago about that blank panel above the microwave. What's there? Absolutely nothing. Waste of space. We have stored our loaves of bread on that top shelf above the TV since day one, but this got me to thinking a little. No problem. Take the microwave out, knock the panel out and build a shelf. Now, we have a bread shelf above the microwave, which frees up the other shelf and makes my wife very happy. I didn't stain and poly this shelf like I have other stuff in this thread, but you can't see it either, so I just left it bare luan. I really like it so far.

Bigger Shoe Rack / Keurig Countertop

And here's the upcoming project when I go get more materials. As seen earlier in this thread, I ditched the storage box by the door for a couple of shelves for shoes. This works great. BUT, I have stared at it too long, and thought too much. We still need a little more shoe storage. I figured I'd gut my recently built shoe shelf, and build one with 3 shelves, and add a small countertop just big enough to hold my small keurig coffee pot. Think what I have now, but taller with a hard surface on top opposed to the padded seat.

To be continued.

I've been staring at that space since day 1 thinking "I bet there's nothing back there!" I just never got around to knocking that panel out.

How hard is it to take out the microwave to gain good access? If it's super easy, I might try it next time the TT is in the driveway. That's after I fix the leaky water pump (easy DIY fix, just have to get the time).

That'll be nice! That's always been a gripe for me with this trailer; not enough counter space. And there's a plug right there on that side of the "entertainment center" too. Should be relatively easy to put an outlet and plate in that spot if you wanted to. I look forward to seeing your work!

Hey Bob, microwave is a piece of cake. Unplug, undo the 4 screws and it slides right out. It rests on a metal pan with some foam strips on the sides and back. I did remove the several 1/4" staples where my 3/4 x 3/4 strips for the shelf would mound flush. I used a combination of 1" countersunk screws and my kreg pocket screws to install the shelf supports.

Nice mod BigJohnD! I love reading about your mods and seeing the pictures. Now this is one mod that would even be simple enough for me to do (without damaging something else). lol

The simple mods are sometimes the most useful and most satisfying.

So, I've never been one that cared for social media. RV forums are pretty much the only thing I'm involved with that connects me with others. My wife and I are hermits / loners / private, whatever you want to call it, and just don't like throwing our personal business out there. That's just us.

BUT, I decided to start my own YouTube channel, mainly for the people that know me. Now I wish I'd have filmed all the how to and modification stuff over the last 14 years or so. Just to get a video on the channel, I did one of the stuff most of you have already seen. Of course now you can see it in just under 5 minutes opposed to looking all over the forum. Here's the link to the video:

In the future, I do intend on posting more modification stuff, how to stuff, or something that somebody requests maybe. By no means did I create this channel to get popular, make money, get noticed, land some gig etc etc. I honestly could care less. I just love doing the stuff, sharing the projects with others, helping people out, and of course being helped and schooled myself.

The name Vaco Customs is not a valid business. It is just the name I have done projects and some jobs under since 2003 when the shop was built. However, if I did run a business out of that shop, it would be, of course, Vaco Customs.

In case you're curious where in the world the name Vaco (The "a" sound is a long "a", as in hay) came from, here's the story. My late granddads last name was VanVeckhoven. Different name for sure, but is from abroad. His grandparents were immigrants to Louisiana. The locals shortened the name to Vaco, mainly because it was easier to pronounce. Being he was pretty much one of the only occupants on the road, the road got named Vaco. So, now the shop sits on what was once a 70 acre farm. Now you know.

That's it for now. Still waiting on more funding to get back going with more projects on the Jayco, shop, and everything else.

Thanks, John!

I tried to subscribe (a first for me), but it says I need to get a Google email address (or something like that). I'm in the hermit / loner / private category, too so I'll just check for your stuff on YouTube from time to time.

Thank you all for the comments. I wish I had the time and the money to do more, but that's limited. BUT, rest assured it will happen at some point. When it does, a link will be posted here, or of course those who subscribed will see it.

Thinking about posting one I have on the whole shop. I have a slide show from day one until present showing the build. I also have a few other non-RV projects I might throw out there.

Another idea was to do a video / walk around explaining exactly "WHY" I did all of the things in the first video. Yall know, but to anybody else you might get a WTH.

Tom, as soon as I saw you had the first comment on YouTube, I thought to myself you should do one. Then of course I see your comment here. Hope you do, I'd love to see it.

2 days ago I had no idea how to even create a channel. I just knew how to look up videos. I'm still learning. I am computer savy, but not on YouTube stuff. I don't have the nice equipment to make super videos either, so it is what it is.
