Convert double bunk to one half bunk, one full?

We have a 242BHSW and the double bunks we are finding they are just not usable for our family. The kids just end up all sleeping on the dining room table because they its too dark and claustrophobic.

Easy solution we thought might be cutting the top bunk in half and leaving part of it open. Top bunk would be used by a child < 100 pounds.

Has anyone done this? Would appreciate some pics and advice if anyone has.

I found a Keystone Springdale with a similar setup so I think it might work.

Sleep with their heads near the door opening. Won't seem so closed in.
