Damage to bathroom door and vanity cupboard door

So I made a bone headed mistake and left my dog in the TT while we were at the Canada Day Fireworks display. The noise of the fireworks of course scared the dog so badly that he tried to get into the bathroom (his normal hiding spot at home during thunderstorms) and he clawed the bathroom and vanity cupboard doors.

While the cupboard is a solid door, I can hide most of the nicks with some brown paint, but the hollow core bathroom door is in pretty rough shape. I am thinking about buying a piece of veneer to overlay it and just cutting a slightly larger recess for the doorknob so that it retains it's original spacing.

I will have to notch out where the hinges are exposed, but otherwise I should be good for clearance.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

With a minimum of carpentry, you could replace that door with a new one.

If you can find a bathroom door the same size, or close enough that it can be trimmed I'd hang a new door. If that prooves to hard to find or very expensive, I think your plan sounds fine.

When I was a kid my dad had to replace the bathroom door in our motor home, he took a hollow core door, Marked the size he needed, cut out the side and end spacers, slid them to their new positions, clamped them down, cut the door to the size he needed, re-glued the spacers, sanded, re-stained the new cuts and hung it up. Looked like original to me.

I'd find a piece of the arborite or some stainless/aluminum sheeting from home depot and do a kitchen door idea if it isn't too damaged. Protect it from another scary dog attack. Click image for larger version

I was in a local trailer dealers parts department and happened to notice a door identical to one for our bathroom. It looked brand new and they wanted 20 dollars for it. I thought of buying it to use for our bedroom but changed my mind. The dealer is in Abbotsford BC by UFV. Check out parts departments for such items. They usually have rooms where they sell discontinued or returned items.

I had just assumed that a new door would be significantly more expensive, but I will take a look. As for the metal sheeting idea, I was thinking about buying some of that for a heat shield for the deck railing behind my home BBQ anyway. I guess it would only make sense to price out a second, larger piece.

Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions.
