Electric Awning
Has anyone added an electric awning to their trailer? I have a Jayco Swift 184BH and don't like the struts on the awning that came with the standard setup. Other than wiring the unit and running a switch, what else might I need to be aware of. Or, can it even be done on that trailer?

They are convenient but HUNKS OF JUNK... they cannot be adjusted one leg lower for when it rains... they break to easy.. I would much rather have a manual... and when my Crappee of Colorado gives up the ghost again I will replace it with a manual one...

I don't know about the aftermarket ones, but mine is adjustable for pitch. You just pull down one side and tighten the knob and you're GTG. Also, the struts are designed to dump when/if the awning collects any water, but I just set mine with a pitch to be safe.
If mine ever goes, I will most likely replace with an electric one depending on the situation.

We have a Carefree electric awning on our 2012 Eagle and we love it. It has 5 different adjustment holes to adjust pitch on either side, so you can rain dump it on either end. If you lose power there is a way to roll it up via battery hookup. I think when they first came out, a lot of them weren't pitch adjustable, but now, I think most are. I'm sure they make something for your unit as I've seen them as short as 8ft, coming off a port side slide.

X2 to Seann. Personally I would have a manual unit in a heartbeat. I hit my head on the framing all the time if I do not hang something from them. When you are out camping find someone with a unit about your size, and height. Then go talk with them about it and walk around it and see if you will hit your head, and look at the light weight construction of it.
The biggest thing you have to do is find out is the wall construction of your Swift. You can call Jayco up with your vin number talk with them about it, request the wall drawings. Then determine if you have wall structures in the correct places.

Amen! I cannot stress this enough.
The electric awnings have different points of weight distribution. We had a customer bring their rig in for wall repairs because the awning literally pulled off the outside skin because it did not have the right bracing. It was not on a Jayco though.. (another dealer installed it... we just fixed the mess).

Our electric awning has 5 adjustments for angle. Sallie likes it and I would prefer the old fashion kind so I could put it out and stake it to the ground. Our fabric is starting to go on the edge where it attaches to the trailer. I would like to get one with the metal cover. Shade Pro gave us a bid but they are way out of line on their price.

When the apocalypse occurs and you have no battery power or shore power or solar power, how will you deploy and furl your electric awning? I will be sitting in the shelter of my good ole' manual awning sipping a glass of iodine water laughing at you.

That's a serious consideration I never thought about. Maybe it will be windy, about 800 mph from a nuclear blast, in which case I wouldn't put the awning out anyway. Also, in that situation, you might want to chase your iodine water with some Jack Daniels.
I like your sense of humor, mcfarmall. It's dry, but it's funny.

Apocalypse? No one told me about any darn apocalypse?! I better re-think my travel plans. Anyone looking for a pre-apocalyptic TT, low mileage, like new, has manual awning with forehead dents. Leaving town, must sell! moving to Antarctic for a few decades.

Atomic batteries to power, turbines to speed! Sounds like Batman to me. Used to love that show. Never really appreciated the humor until I was an adult. Come to think of it, I'm still not an adult, I just have an old body like one.

Our Carefree scissors out and I'm 6'2 and it's above my head. Funny, I used to clock myself all the time with the manual on our Flagstaff. Of course, I always left the arms at 45* angle instead of setting them on the ground.

I've said it on here before. I could have made a good youtube out of me trying to get my stupid manual awning back in the first time. I never took it out again. In fact, our new (2012) 197 had an electric one already installed. Great! My good wife can roll out the awning now. Settled.

There is a manual override (though I don't know how to use it yet, I just know where the strap is).
And besides, during the apocalypse, I won't have my awning out. That would slow me down too much! Most likely I'll have my EZ Up shelter out, that way if I need to bug out in a hurry, I'll just leave the darn thing! ICK, iodine water... I'll filter mine, thanks.
