Generator stupid question

I have a Jayflight 29RKS. Is there any reason that I can't connect my generator directly to the shore power receptacle?

None that I know of, based on what you said. Just be sure tto turn off your camper’s breakers until the connection is made and the gen is running.

Why ? I don't shut off the breakers in the camper before I connect to shore power? Just curious

I suppose it would depend on how the generator works. If it's a higher end model that will wait to supply power until the output is stabilized you should be fine to do that. I'm not sure if cheaper units do that or just send power from the beginning of the start sequence which would not be good for the systems on your RV. Food for thought.

I don't turn off any breakers ever... and I've never ruined a generator or an RV since 1960.

The generators I own say to let the genny warm up before attaching a load. With that said I would let the generator warm up and then plug in without messing with breakers.

^^^^ That's the method we use.

When departing, our procedure includes turning off all the TT breakers and shutting off the CG breaker before disconnecting from the CG power.

We plug in to the CG power and then turn the TT breakers on only after our EMS says it's OK.

I have always turned the TT breakers off first and turned the main breaker off on the pedestal before plugging in the shore power cable. I then plug in the shore power cable. I go inside and then I look at the 110VAC meter that I have installed to see the AC voltage is within an acceptable range. I then flip the TT breakers on.

I have encountered a few 30Amp pedestal outlets that were worn and the voltage was fluctuating, so I changed to the 50Amp pedestal outlet. I have yet to find a 50 amp outlet that was bad. Always good to have the 30>50 amp adapter.

When leaving I turn the TT breakers off first, then continue with the pedestal breaker and removing the shore power cable.

I figure that this is the best way to do it and not cause any electrical problems for the TT electronics.

I treat the generator the same way.

I went back and read the manual and switching the main breaker off before hooking up to shore power is the procedure.

Learned something new.

Is switching the main breaker necessary if you use a Progressive EMS that runs through a series of tests on the line before passing power through to the coach?

The best practice for hooking up to a pedestal is to turn off the breakers first. Plug in and then turn the breakers on. Plugging into the live pedestal or pulling our your cord from a live pedestal causes arcs on the blades of your power cord. Then the blades become pitted and corrosion starts and high resistance before you know it you need a new cord end. I'm sure you have noticed this arc when removing the vacuum cord when it is running at your house on a 15 amp circuit.

no you wouldn't... that is the whole point of having one... it does all that for you.. when i fire up my generator or plug in at a campground it waits till everything is correct before it puts power to the trailer...

If you were out and about and the power was lost at the campground and the power came back on you wouldn't be there to turn off the breaker before the power came back on... so the logic is sound the practicality of it not so much...

I love my hardwired EMS for many reasons, and this is one of them. The 2min delay before allowing power into the coach allows me to have a look at the readouts before anything happens (although if something were not right it would deal with it) and mostly, it allows my generator to warm up and stabilize for 2 minutes before carrying the electrical load demands. Brilliant, especially with the remote start on the genny!

Yes it is.. it can prevent damage to the prongs on the plug (arcing etc) talking about the main breaker on the pole

Plug into the 15 amp 110 volt plug with no problem but if you have a 30 amp twistlock on the generator that could be a 220 volt outlet and not the same as a 30 amp rv plug

Also be aware that most generators are not neutral-ground bonded. If it isn't the EMS won't allow power through. Not sure how it would work without EMS as I have only operated my RV with EMS system. As for powering down the pedestal before plugging in with EMS, not necessary since there is no immediate power draw. The EMS analyzes the power first, which takes little to no current, then, if ok, energizes the transfer switch powering the RV. Having said that I always power down pedestal before plugging in and again before unplugging, where arcing can occur since full power is on.
