Help in tuning down fan speed

I picked up a 12v oscillator fan and wired it to the bottom bunk bed light. Let me tell you it's one strong fan. What kind of resistor can I use to tune down the speed. I know they require amount of voltage for it to work.

Her is what I picked up

Why not just use a plug-in dimmer switch?

That variable resistor will change from 0 ohms to 5000 ohms. And can handle 2W.

You'll need a small "project box" to mount your new dimmer to, and you could get away with crimp connectors, although the soldering job for this need not be pretty! Just clip the 12v+ line going to your fan and insert this pot. (potentiometer.) Drill some holes into your enclosure to let air circulate. CHeck the heat of the resistor after running for a while. If its to hot to touch, discontinue use, and search for a higher wattage variable resistor.

this is a 12-volt fan, so a pre-fab dimmer switch (which may actually work...) would need to be modified by cutting off any house-current plugs.
