LED Taillight Mod

The Taillights on most campers are really dim during the day and I wanted to convert to LED for the added brightness. The taillights on most are made by Command Products and their web site listed a kit for the Command 81 lights.
K-0026: SURFACE MOUNT LED TAIL LIGHT UPGRADE KITS â€” Command Electronics
The kit arrived in a couple days and off to the 5W to install. Remove the old cover, cut the socket off, strip the wires,use provided connectors and connect wires as instructed, secure circuit board to two bottom screws, install new lens cover. Repeat, 20 minutes for both sides.

Great mod! I tried to accomplish the same thing and went with the Philips LED's that fit into the existing bulb sockets. It wasn't as bright as I had hoped. I didn't think to look for anything like this.

Nice mod, been thinking about upgrading mine to led for the brightness, is there a big differance. I thought about getting one of the plug and play lights that plugs into the light bulb socket.

I took a trip this weekend, and my buddy that was following me told me my right side brake light and turn signal was not working. We took a look when we reached our destination, and discovered that the socket and bulb were all rusty.

I am ordering this kit now to eliminate that problem.

I also want to upgrade to Leds the original tail lights actually have tinted lenses. What's with that?? Makes them even harder to see.

The Command alED Upgrade is very good. Very bright. You can actually tell the park lights are on in full sun. Definately worth the 40-odd bucks Canadian. I put these on last summer and am very happy with them.

I made the change a couple of weeks ago and very happy with the result. Much brighter and as Northern Jay said, they are easily seen in direct sun. Definitely worth the money

It's puzzling to me that they use an incandescent bulb for the license plate light.

I just now got around to installing the conversion kit. Piece of cake.

I am really amazed at how cheaply made the original tail light assemblies are. Crap like that doesn't belong on a $65,000 fifth wheel. I expect that even with the LED conversion, moisture will eventually cause another problem down the road. The wire splices are probably the weak link now.

You guys that have installed this kit, is there a good difference in brightness between running lights and stop/signal lights?

That's the one thing that worries me about aftermarket LED lights, I see lots of pickup trucks with aftermarket tail lights which have almost no difference in brightness!

Otherwise this is exactly what I'm looking for.

The ones from Command Electronics are right from the original manufacturer. There is a big difference between running and turn signal/brake. The vehicle ones are usually smoke tinted and NOT OEM.
In this case, you DO get what you paid for.

I second that!!...Not sure why an LED wasn't used for that part of it also???

I changed "all" lights (clearance, running and brake/turn) to LED; but when I was researching and found they "cut corners" and used an incandeescent bulb as part of that assembly, I located another complete LED taillight assembly that was similar and retrofitted it. Turned out well and no incandescent.

Can you tell us where you found the full Led lights? And did you have to put in a resistor for them to work?

Found them at a local auto accessories shop (Canada). As I stated the LED tallights were exactly same dimensions and D.O.T. approved. I had to remove the original lights (complete assemblies) and apply the new ones. Much brighter than the OEN incandescent. No resistor was needed. Just cut the wires and reattached to new assemblies. One of the lights has the clear lens at bottom same as original to light the licence; but also as stated it's LED and not an incandescent.

Bottom line they were one heck of a lot cheaper and quality is as good if not better than OEM. Easy R&R.

Check your local auto accessory shops and I'm sure you'll find an LED set that is comparable.

Thanks for the reply, I don't mind doing the leg work but what "chain store" did you get them from? I'm also Canadian so I should be able to get them easy. Thanks again.
